After all the research and reading what are the masses doing, neck sizing or using a collet die. I use a collet die with great results. My problem is I'm moving to a 6.5 lapua and they dont list a 6.5 as a die. (collet)

Re: So what is it neck sizing or collet

The 6.5 x 47mm Lapua is listed by Redding as a category III die, meaning it's gonna be expensive. Lee doesn't offer a collet die for it so you're SOL there. I recommend a Redding type S bushing match die set if you want the absolute most accurate ammo you can make. Money well spent.

My experience with the collet dies is that they do a good job until you have shot the brass about 4 or 5 times. The brass is not as malable at that point and just does not seem to size as well. A bushing die will work best in this case. However, this problem is easily corrected with annealling. I have also found that the collet dies have very little run out. I wanted to check it for myself and sure enough, there is just not that much at all.

Re: So what is it neck sizing or collet

I must admit I went with the .260 Rem instead of the 6.5 x 47 due to the cost of the dies and lack of availability of the Lee collet die in that cal.

Re: So what is it neck sizing or collet

I used a 6.5x55 collect die to use for my 6.5x47. Had to shorten the collect to use on the shorter case as well as the stem. Works like it should!

Re: So what is it neck sizing or collet

For what it's worth: I had tried the collet dies for my 7-08 but experienced lots of runout. My bullets are seated way out of the case with minimal purchase on the case neck which is one of the reasons for the runout. Somewhat out of desperation, I removed the seating stem from my RCBS dies and set them for a very minimal crimp/squeeze (no bullet deformity). I ran the loaded rounds through the dies and this eliminated the runout.

For grins. Just email LEE with the question, Do you or can you make a neck die for 6.5x47? They will probably reply to you the same day with an answer and price. They are good people to deal with. I used to get custom decappers from them and they were always great to deal with.

Except I dont use neck sizers as I like the case to be supported while the neck is being sized(its just what works for me). The Forster dies are hard to beat. The expander can be set right beneath the neck which keeps run out to basically nothing, especially with full length sizer. With the last 1000 pieces of blue box 47 brass I got the factory forster die gives me 2thou neck tension which is what I like, but even if you do need to get the neck honed it is very affordable and Forster is great to deal with. Not to mention their seaters are great also as they too support the case fully as they are seating the bullet, which also keeps run out to next to nothing.

I believe you can get a FL sizer and seater for less than $80 from sinclair.

That has been my experience as well however if you talk with Lee they will make a mandrel any size u want. in addition to there regular 308 mandrel which is 306 i order a 304 to get more squeeze on work hardened brass.

Re: So what is it neck sizing or collet

I ordered a Lee collet neck sizing die for my .243 WSSM. I sent their custom shop two pieces of fireformed brass, two .243 boolits and a USPS money order in the amount of $59. The predicted two to six months turn-around but I had my dies in six weeks.

They also will make custom mandrels so you can get the exact neck tension you're looking for.
