Here's what sucks about this scenario. Folks I know in come cities think that they will be able to come to the country in the event of a catastrophic event. For those savvy enough to travel that far under said hypothetical scenario, good luck. I've had one tell me they'd come out here and learn to live off of the land from me. I told this gentleman "You need to start learning some of those things now." People who don't hunt or trap think they will just be able to come out here with their families in an emergency with a YouTube university mindset. I'm under the impression that some think they can be shown these things once or twice, and expect to be able to survive. I hunt and eat off of this land which means I'm in tune with the animal population. I have an idea on their numbers and what the land can sustain. There aren't enough animals to sustain large groups of wasteful and picky people who depend upon supermarkets and the service sector to live. What I imagine will happen is that property boundaries would be strictly enforced and when people over hunt their lands or lands others that allow them to seek refuge on, some may encroach upon the land of others. Big problem here, this is when conflict will likely arise between otherwise good people. I hope I don't live to see this sort of thing. I have no issue telling people "Don't come out here."

I think it's going to be a lot more random and unexpected what works and doesn't work and where and all that.
The two big things that are most likely are: The power grid going down hard and staying down. Anything to do with radio communication going down hard.

But remember a lot of that could be done by folks who know all the backdoors to shut down the grid and power and commercial communications.

If all the power goes off, and all the cell phones are suddenly dead and all the phones / commercial communications are suddenly down, was it an EMP? Was it a Solar event? Was it someone logging into the backdoors and shutting everything down? Yes your cell phone can be remotely shutdown on command.

In any case I expect lots of stuff will still be running one way or another.

^ This is the only real reason I keep horses around. I can do 5x the work off of a SxS with 1/5 the maintenance, but if a scenario where fuel goes away occurs - I've got horsepower. Wife and girls like horses too...so I guess we'll always have horses.

I also keep two, 500-gallon off-road diesel tanks here for the tractors. Use about 600-700 gallons per year...so I would hopefully have 3-15 months on hand at any point should the availability go away. I'd also be trading cows for fuel like mad for a bit...not going to take them to market at that point anymore. Would also cut back on the diesel consumption and maybe give me a little more time.

We have horses as well. If push comes to shove...I will eat the buggers

Yes and no.

I for example drive a vehicle with a lot of gear in it, and I could camp out in it for a couple days or more no problem.
If it's something simple like a couple years ago when stupid truckers decided to try to pass each other over a bridge on a frozen highway and wound up stuck and everyone was stuck in their cars for 2 or 3 days waiting for someone to clear the idiots off the road, I may just stay put if all the other signs show civilization is normal.

But there are a specific sequence of events or tell tale signs or things I look out for (and others may come up unexpectedly) where I take that as my pre-planned queue to get out, grab the pack and the cart and start walking on down the road promptly.

Other event sequences, say grab what I can throw on my back and beat feet away from the road to cover or at least good concealment.

I'd suggest a lot of folks that invest in lots of gear and getting their vehicle ready probably have thought about it and probably have their own triggers of when it's time to hoof it on foot.

Comms is a area we have covered a many times here before. The bulk that is in that video is entry level, with a tiny bit of mid thrown in. People need to think out of the box when buying TX/RX gear, as there may be programing ability's on the biggest POS radio made, that will allow completion of a single task perfectly for penny's on the dollar. Most people worry about encryption or some way to keep things close to the chest. This is the simplest thing to master, but only if you think out of the box. Using any coding or encryption will draw the fly's to your honey faster than you can blink your eyes. Operating openly yet using your own code words/phrase that listening ears never alert to, is your best bet. HF radio allows it all from next door to anywhere on this rock as long as,... You Know What You're doing. As well as you are positive you know who your talking to. All that comes from doing & knowing how prior to needing it. One thing to always remember one can be a expert at ABC when its a game. Add real life & death stress to the equation and no matter who it is they will always revert to their lowest level of training & their lag time will be 3-4 times longer. Which could be a game/life changing event by its self.

I used to live about 60 miles from where I worked. With a wife and young kids at home, I spent alot of time figuring out different plans for getting home in the event of nearly any scenario I could come up with.
Similar to geocacashing, i figured out a few key places I'd end up near no matter the route or circumstances and got some inexpensive, but useful items scattered along the way. An empty military plastic snap top first aid kit box with ziplocked socks, 9mm ammo, moleskin, super glue, duct tape, firestarter, and mtnops energy bars is still unretrieveable thanks to a parking lot asphalt addition, but one day, someone at an archeological site will wonder if this cache was placed before, or after ww3.

I have stuff all points of the compass, that if I lose it so what, but what is stashed will keep me alive and allow me to quickly trade up, if need be. The two small packs I shuffle in & out of the rides have enough for 4 days no matter what, total weight including bang shit is 39# Will I be comfortable in any weather no, but snivel gear when in was never my thing anyway. If I never learned but one thing in the Army it was, you never what to be a pack mule to or during the opening of a fight.

I have a pistol and three mags at all times. Backpack in the car with a couple of filtration straws. Sutures, bandages, torniquet and Celox. Fishing line, hooks and some rubber worms (I'm in Florida so Bass are in every little pond and canal here).

I also have a baggie of salt, magnesium fire starter and a metal cup.

This is more for the people gone ape shit crazy and I'm going to have to hump it through some adverse terrain/people/shit scenario to get home and defend what's mine or get my actual go bag.

I've also had to use my Celox and torniquet coming across a bad accident before the paramedics got there. Me just so happening to have that saved a guy's life.
