Hi all, been lurkig around for a few months and decided to join. I need some help in the precision department (I think). I will be joining the USMC in January of 2010 with the end goal being a Scout-Sniper or a member of one of the Recon special forces teams. I realize they are both lofty goals and will be extremely hard to achieve but why have goals if you won't go for it? I currently have a Remington 700 LTR that was bought from a SWAT member up here in Alaska. It has a McMilliam A4 stock, trued action, Badger bolt knob, some trigger work done (2lbs single stage), a Shooter's Ridge swivel/canting bipod and to top it off it has Millet 4.5-16x50mm mildot scope with a nightforce base and TPS (I think) rings. It's shooting 1/2 MOA with 168gr FGMM at the moment.

Basically I would like some input on what I should try while out shooting versus simply punching paper. I have practiced out to 500 yards and been able to maintain that 1/2 MOA. Are there any USMC specific things that I should be practicing/mastering so that I can have an edge against other people I would be competing against? Thank you all very much for any information. I'll post a pic of the rifle in a little bit.

Re: Some precision help

Sigh...you know this topic comes up every once in a while and the answers are always pretty much the same...focus on being the best soldier/Marine that you can and the rest will follow. The best edge that you can have is a sound mind and body, trust me, because there's more to that field than just being a good shot. Do basic first and decide from there.

Re: Some precision help

Becoming a Marine in the first place, should be your number 1 goal! Then once you complete that goal, it should be becoming the best infantry Marine you can be, then you should strive for the goal of becoming a sniper. No I am not a sniper, nor do I claim to be one, but I am a Marine and that process is how it is with 100% of the specialty MOS's out there. Good Luck to you and enjoy the experience. And about the shooting. You will be taught everything you need to know about shooting the Marine Corps way in boot camp and in your infantry career. Cheers!

Re: Some precision help

Well to put things in perspective the goal of Scout-Sniper or special forces will be the culmination of a set of goals. The reason for my question was to better prepare myself for what's in store for me. And I agree completely with you alien319, I have to take it in steps and try to be the best I am no matter where I end up. For now I know I'll atleast be Infantry after I complete boot camp.

One goal at a time , start with the easier smaller ones, all the while keeping the big one in focus, train hard, practice harder, then train and practice some more and you'll do well
