I'm wanting to try RL17 in my 6.5-06 pushing 140gr A-max. I really don't know what grain to start at. Alliant website is showing 54gr max on a .270 pushing 130gr bthp. I figure I could start out around 50grs. Is this correct. I would really appricate any info on this. Thanks, Trent

Why is that??

Summitsitter,

The MAX load list for a 270 and a 150 gr bullet is 51.5 grains. Your trying to push a 140 gr bullet through a smaller bore.

I would reduce the 150 gr 270 load by 5 full grains, and start at 46.5 grains and work it up from there, in your 6.5-06.

Just to be safe.

OK, I actually have a 6.5-06 and I've shot a number of powders through it. It's a different animal guys. Keep in mind that it has an overbore ratio akin to a 338 LM, not a 30-06.

RL-17 is too fast for this case, you'll get overpressure signs before you get top speeds from it.

The 140 Amax has a long bearing surface compared to other premium 140gr 6.5's. The identical load of RL-22 in my rifle pushes the 140 Berger 100fps faster than the Amax. This means you see pressure signs sooner with the Amax than you do with the Bergers or JLK's

RL-22 is too fast for this case to get max velocity. RL-22 blows primers out at 54gr in my rifle. RL-17 will be a HOTTTTT load at 50gr. Try 47 if you think you want to use this powder.

I've quit using the RL series powders once I made the realization on the overbore ratio and needing a long barrel. I have a 28" barrel and I think it's a little short.

Try 56.5gr of Retumbo to start with that bullet, load it 0.010" off the lands. My attainable high speed node with 140 Amax is 57.5gr, ejector marks show at 58.2 and 58.6 is stretching the extractor groove.

I don't understand why people shoot the 6.5-284 with H4831sc honestly. It's too fast for the case. If they just switched to something slower you'd get better velocities.

FWIW, 49.5gr of H4831sc runs 2875fps with 140 Bergers from my 6.5-06 and shoots itty bitty groups. It's just painfully slow and leaves lots of airspace left in the case. 51.75gr shows pressure and about 50 fps faster from the 28" barrel but it's not as tight for groups in my rifle.

FWIW, my high node is currently 140Berger @ 3175 fps with 59.7gr of RETUMBO. Using the 140 Amax I'd suggest you start at 56.5gr and work up an OCW test in 0.25-0.3gr increments until you see the extractor groove grow by 0.001" That's your functional pressure limit.

Bring calipers to the range with you, measure the groove before you shoot it, write the data down, shoot it, measure, write down the measurement. Note the change (if any).

You can get 61.0 in the case with a decent crunch if you use a long drop tube and tap the case to settle the powder. I've shot up to this point but it's stretching extractor grooves and only giving me 10fps faster and shoots like shit. Clearly overpressure.
