just wondering if anyone knows how much louder a bolt action 20" will be compared to a 22".. not looking for actual numbers, just wondering if its that noticeable? i having a 308 built and am about to make a barrel choice, just trying to get everything figured out before i make the purchase...length isnt a great concern but I do want to keep it around 20"

I'd say as short of a barrel that you are comfortable with. That will lesson the vibration/harmonics and give you a shorter over all length. 2" will not matter the difference will be under 75fps.

Maybe 18" if you are not going to shoot past 1000 a lot.

I have an 18.5 inch barrel and it is very hard to tell the difference with the same can on a 26", side by side.

Re: Sound Suppression 20"vs 22"

I shoot a lot of suppressed rifle cal stuff with 16" barrels and the sound difference between them and 24"-28" barrels is not noticeable to the average ear if at all. Pick a length you like for whatever reasons make you happy and don't let suppression have any influence on the decision. It won't make any difference. There are other reasons to pick a different length based on using a suppressor and for that reason the shorter barrels are usually better because they are stiffer and won't be affected by the weight of the can as much.

Hope that helps
