I have been looking at lots of pics of guys out west shooting in wide open spaces I'm assuming are owned by the govt.

Do any of you east coast shooters know if shooting like this is legal or plausible in our national forests?

I know it's legal to target shooting in the local forest nearest me assuming you have a safe backstop. There are places I know of where I could get on a mountain top and shoot to the side of another mountain easily 800 or more yards.

Have any of you done anything like this?

Find the name of the National Forest and look on their website and see if they have any rules on target shooting. In Colorado we can't shoot across a body of water, can't shoot across or from a road and cant shoot if endangering life or property. Also we have to use cardboard targets, metal targets or clay pigeons.

You can also contact your Forest Service office and ask for a map and the shooting regulations.
