Spare Parts kit?

Re: Spare Parts kit?

In order of importance:

Bolt (which will cover your extractor, ext. spring assembly, ejector/spring and gas rings) This and the firing pin will take you a long way without taking up much space or $$$.

Firing pin

Other Small bolt parts (Cam pin, firing pin retaining pin)

Carrier assembly (or at least gas key parts)

Trigger/Hammer springs

Trigger/Hammer

Piston/pison parts (should you have not have a gas gun)

AR parts aside, you will better served with spare batteries for optics/lights (should you have them) and some lube in most cases.

Stop and consider all of the things that are superfluous on the AR platform. No sense in stocking up on ejection port covers and forward assists. If it isn't involved in the firing/cycling process, don't worry about it.

For my "work gun" I have a complete bolt, firing pin, and piston packed with my gear.

As my colleague mentioned above, having a spare gun is not a bad idea if you can afford it. Personally, I will have a go-to tricked out version, and a bare-bones, KISS version as a spare (or to brush up on the fundamentals if I want to run only irons and no lights).

+1 yup....a whole mess.

I'll elaborate a bit. In the pistol grip I store a spare bolt and firing pin. In the range bag I have a cleaning kit, lube and a set of tools. I have been toying with the idea of putting a spare parts kit together in a fishing tackle type plastic container to include springs and pins.

Re: Spare Parts kit?

There's a lot of empty space on the AR that can fit the essential spare parts/back-up items that these guys are discussing.

Forward grips are often empty and can store a little vial of lube or some batteries. Pistol grips can carry an extra bolt and firing pin (I think). There are plenty of stocks that have storage in them too. Magpul makes some pretty nice stuff. I have a Vltor stock that I might sell or trade for a magpul. I like their grips too for the storage features.

Once I finish my bolt gun, my attention is going back to my DMR. I carry back up stuff with me to the range, but if I get separated from my bag and something fails, I'm screwed.

Re: Spare Parts kit?

Since I didn't really contribute to your question....

Bolt (covers a lot of the typical failures), lube, firing pin and batteries. Cleaning kit too but that's kind of a given I think for all firearms and range bags.
