Re: speer 64gr gdsp

Might I ask why y'all switched to that round and what y'all were shooting before? I've proposed switching to Speer. I'd be interested to hear about it.

Re: speer 64gr gdsp

we only switched for our 2 DMR rifles, all of our patrol/swat ar's still use federal tactical bonded ammo. but that bullet would not load/feed properly in our rifles. No clue why that problem happend before I became a sniper on the team. I know that the fgmm 77 grain was tested along with a few others and that new speer bullet was the most accurate and had the best results with barrier testing we did on vehicles, ballistic gell, windows etc....

Re: speer 64gr gdsp

Since you asked:

I'm schudeled to teach a LE Sniper school this summer using that round. I got the BC from Speer, G1=.285, the velocity was obtained out of my 20 in WOA Upper. elev. 4500 ft, temp was 45 degrees.

Soft point projectiles w/ exposed lead on the tips are known to cause failure to feed problems after firing 200-300rds, but goes away if you instantly switch to OTM projectiles.

The problem seems to be from lead build up on the feed ramps from the soft point projectiles after firing a few hundred rounds. Be sure to keep the weapon maintained and clean it every few hundred rounds to prevent this problem.

Hope this helps.

BTW was it 62gr TBBC that was causing problems?

Re: speer 64gr gdsp

Not sure about the previous post, however I do know that my Colt M4 can and has fired 1700+ rounds of Speer 64gr Gold Dot with zero failures and zero cleaning.

What all do you want to know about the round? I may be able to do some tests if you need.

Re: speer 64gr gdsp

im probably not the person to address the failure problems, all i can say is after the rifles were built our armorers and sniper team members attempted to fire our current duty ammo in the weapons, all I was told was we switched because it didnt feed or load properly. im not worried about cleaning, Ive fired up to 1000 rounds in a session of our federal xm training ammo and never had a failure to feed or fire problem.

I was just told the duty stuff works in our patrol rifles and doesnt in the DMR rifles. no clue. works for me though because the 64 grain speer stuff is more accurate to me anyway than the federal bonded bullet.

Ill get with our guys and see what the actual problems were with the duty stuff.

Re: speer 64gr gdsp

My Agency switched to the Speer 64 gr. GDSP a while ago. We did extensive ballistic testing prior to switching and this stuff is awsome. You can only ask so much from a 5.56 and this stuff is the best other than the FBI load. This is more accurate then the FBI load though.

I also threw in a special test:

- (2) pieces of 16ga sheet metal simulating an auto door
- heavy clothing
- IIIA ballistic pannel
- This stuff still did 11 inches after that

Re: speer 64gr gdsp

This stuff also performs like a match round. Shoots around MOA out of our patrol rifles. It shoots SUB/MOA out of my personal rifle all day long. It is good out to about 400 and then it really starts to drop and get blown around. Speer also makes this round for .308 in 155 grain and 168 grain. Tested the 168 and it is as accurate as FGMM and it smokes the FGMM in the FBI test battery.

Re: speer 64gr gdsp

The BC I received from Speer for the projectile is .285 (G1). They run 2,880 FPS out of my 20" 9 twist barrel. Also, I pulled one of the bullets and it measured 0.825". Hope this helps.
