Local shop has Speer Gold Dot - 9mm 124gr - $29.00 box of 50. Is this a decent price?
Ammo is in plain white boxes. All I've seen before has been in some type of commercially covered box (Lawmen, Blazer, etc.)
Any negative issues with current CCI/Speer ammo production that anyone has knowledge.

Re: Speer Gold Dot

I use Speer Gold dot in all of my SD / HD handguns with no problems. Only thing Im thinking is those may be reloads being all gold dot that I have seen is in the dark blue box with yellow writing (just of the top of my head).

Re: Speer Gold Dot

The shop says their new production. I just wonder if the "dam" is starting to break open and Speer is using the white boxes to get the stuff out. They also had .40 and .308 in the same style boxes. I just hope QC has not slacked off on it.
Several years ago, I was on the range with a student. A couple of other LE Instructors showed up with the CCI/Speer Field Rep in tow. He had his test lab in the station wagon, ballistic gel blocks and the whole 9 yards. He matched every ammo represented (4 agencies and everything from .38 spl to .44 mag)in a side by side test. The Gold Dot did as advertised. He even used some of the barrier material from the FBI Protocol for the 9's and 45's he shot. Very informative afternoon.

Re: Speer Gold Dot

Years ago I had a few boxes of PD trade-ins (40 cal Gold Dot ammo) that had very bright muzzle flash.

Also had a few boxes of their 40 & 9mm Lawman ammo that had very hard primers (so hard a standard GLOCK will not fire them).

That kept me away from Speer for a few years. When I came back to their product while working for a different company they were exceptional ammo. Did great through barriers, low muzzle flash, always good stuff.

Bottom line is make sure you test the ammo lot.

Re: Speer Gold Dot

New production does not mean new Speer ammo. They (whoever made them) may have gotten their hands on the bullet and made their own "new production" ammo. I think the shortaghe was in the ammo, not paper cartons to put it in. Look at the brass, it should be nickel plated and have the Speer headstamp on it. On the other hand, this ammo may have come from a bulk PD buy, none the less, Gold Dot is a proven bonded bullet and I carry it in everything I use, 38 spcl and .357 mag, .45 ACP, 9 mm and I keep some in .44 mag for hunting and shooting coyotes (rifle and pistol). $29 bucks a box ( of 50 I assume) is not a bad buy if you don't do a lot of business at that store.

Re: Speer Gold Dot

I have some white box Gold Dot I've picked up.

It is marked Ammunition Accessories Inc., CCI/Speer Operations, Lewiston, ID 83501, and is nickle plated Speer headstamped Gold Dot so I assume it is legit. BUT, it is labeled "Not for LE use", "not to be repackaged", and "practice ammunition" so I also assume it is stuff that didn't pass QC for a larger LE order. Kind of like the LC 5.56 you can pick up. That doesn't mean any is bad, rather, it could be a small issue with a few in a lot. Just not sure. I can't tell the difference between it and the black/gold LE boxed stuff. No problems. YMMV.

Incidentally, I have 250rnd bulk packs in the white box. Not sure if yours is the same story or not. And Gold Dot is my favourite pistol ammo as it feeds very reliably for me, including in my 1911's.

Hope this helps.
