So I got a nice deal on a Remmy sps, but it's the 24" skinny barrel model. I plan to shoot it as is so I can get used to it and hone my accuracy skills. My question is this. Eventually, I want to upgrade to a varmint size contour barrel so that it won't heat up so quickly. (I realize I'll have to change out stocks) The way I see it, I can either get a stock Remington varmint barrel (cheaper) or spend the cash on a nice barrel. Now, what I'd like to know is if installing a nice custom barrel on an untrued receiver is like putting lipstick on a pig. I have a pretty tough budget as I haven't figured out how to stop the boy from eating yet, so I don't want to drop $400 on a barrel if it's not going to make that much difference. I'll probably be doing most of my shooting from 100-300 yds, but I'd like to have my options open later to shoot at greater distances once my skills are up to it. Thanks very much and I've really enjoyed lurking on here and gaining a ton of good info. Take care.

Re: Sporter contour sps question

You have a couple options. One you can shoot what you have for the time being. It should shoot well and give you a feel for what your doing, then later, take the money you've been saving and have a new barrel put on.

Option two shoot what you have for now but keep your eyes pealed for a used Varment or Tactical and trade yours in on it. Its hard to say witch one of these will better fit you.

Good Luck

Re: Sporter contour sps question

if your going to change the barrel out for a bull Barrel then you will have problems with the stock. the stock on the sps standard barrel is not made for a BB. i would save up for a nice barrel and a custom stock, and from what i noticed on my BB remmy its more fun to shoot cause of the no heat up effect.

and welcome to the Snipers Hide

Re: Sporter contour sps question

I'd say shoot it as is. Skinny barrels heat up faster, but cool down quicker, kind of a trade off, as long as the shots don't walk as it heats up.

Then, keep your eyes open for a new take off barrel and stock, and scoop 'em up as your budget allows.

I've had several guns rebarreled with no work done to the action, other than surface grinding the recoil lug. You'd never know it by how well they shoot.

Re: Sporter contour sps question

hi if you are on a budget forst wait until you can find a Varmint or tacticle take of stock and then drop the barreled action in it. then wait until you gat some more funds together and wait until a 5R or varmint take out barrel comes up then wait a little longer still shooting the shit out of the barreled action you have getting in practice. then get a thicker ground recould lug and get a gunsmith to square the face of the action and headspace the take out barrel and then you will again be good to go. if a rem action has the face squared and the lugs lapped with a thicker ground lug to make up for the material removed squaring the action they shoot very well.

Take it one step at a time and get the new stock first then look for a barrel as the thin barrel will work in the heavy barrel channel and you can shoot it until the barrel is hammered.

So then I can get the stock before the barrel? I was looking at the B&C medalist stocks, possibly the light tactical with the full alumininum block. Are those decent for the money, or would I be better off saving up for a better stock. Keep in mind I don't want anything too bulky as of right now.

Re: Sporter contour sps question

The barrels on those guns really arent bad, you will probably get better accuracy out of the gun with a better stock than a better barrel on that stock.

Re: Sporter contour sps question

Check with Bob White at Shooters Corner. Bob frequently has take off barrels or used benchrest, hunter class and varmint barrels That will fit a Remington action. You might also check with some of the Riflesmiths here on the hide about barrels they take off of the actions they are about to true. You will also see, on occasion, Remington HS Precision stocks listed on the Hide because some one is upgrading. The ones that come off of the Remington 5R rifles are cut for a Sendero contour. Good luck, what you want to do can be accomplished with a little patience.

Re: Sporter contour sps question

Don't forget....you need new bottom metal.
It doesn't matter if you get a DBM, aftermarket floorplate, or even a stock BDL style, the SPS has a plastic triggerguard and floorplate that absolutely has to get changed in order to make a rifle out of it.

They shoot surprisingly well out of the box as there is nothing bad about the stock barrel.
Just start with a stock and bottom metal and you'll be shocked at how well it will group....if you do your part.
