what do you all recommend, to try and spot my own shots at long range. An angled eye piece, or a straight eye piece. dont have any friends that can get away from their wives need to be my own spotter. what you all think. thanks!!

Re: spotting scope help!!

Another way to answer same as above, do you want to spot your hits or misses? If first, depends on range, but maybe 20-60 range, if latter, get a very good scope and stay on it.

Re: spotting scope help!!

i am running a NF 8-32 and 12-42 on all my guns, but i cant pick it up after the shot. i saw a guy shooting black powder match once that had a spotting scope set up right next to his head and as soon as the shot went off he would spot him self i can't remember what eye piece he had looked as if it was working for him.

I'll toss in here too and recommend that you forget this idea. Bringing the rifle back to target before releasing the trigger is a key fundamental of follow through. The range of your target and the recoil of your rifle along with your skill will determine if you can get the target back in your field of view fast enough to see the impact, and I guarantee you won't be able to fire a shot and get on a spotting scope any faster.

One thing I have done is to use a small JVC Everio video cam on a tripod set up next to the gun. They will zoom up to something like 20X, pretty near the upper limit of practical field magnification. Have the camera record your hits then play them back. It will work better than using a spotting scope and be lighter to carry. Heres a Link to EBay showing this type of camera; they have a small screen at the rear, and are about the size of two packs of cigarettes. Hope this helps.
