I am going to be shooting out to a mile at some points in time maybe 2000 yards. I am going for a mil dot reticle but want to know if 40x is sufficient or if 80x is what I want to go with?

Im assuming more magnification the better but I am unfamiliar with spotting scopes in general, any help would be appreciated.
