My running buddy has a 338 Lapua coming in next week. A NF 12x4 will eventually go on the rifle but for now a NF5.5x22 will have to do. We need a spotting scope. We want to spot impacts and would like to watch the "vapor" trails also. We have no experience whatever with spotting scopes. I'm sure there is a reason why top spotting scopes are 2K. I am looking at a Konus 20x60x80 Model#7120 for $220. I am sure there is a reason they are that price also, but all we are wanting is an entry level spotting scope we can use. What is your opinions on the scope? Is there any reasonable priced spotting scopes with MOA hashes similiar to the NP-R2 recticles? We are ignorant on spotting scopes and any and all opinions and advice is appreciated! Thanks krw

Re: spotting scope questions

Why not use one of your rifle scopes for the duty. You could pull it off the rifle if you want and lay it across your pack or even leave it on the gun.

Re: spotting scope questions

Konus is a Knock off from Kowa. I have a Kowa and it is a decent spotting scope. I think the Konus for $200 would be hard to beat. But if your going to spend all that money on high end rifle scopes, use your rifle scopes till you can get at least in the mid range like a Kowa.

The spotting scope is good to have and most enjoyable

Re: spotting scope questions

Kowa is decent? Kowa is mid range?

Man I must be poor as all hell cause to my eyes and wallet I would venture to say Kowa is top notch if not even better than Swarovski. Maybe you mean the non-HD version of Kowa is mid range.

Re: spotting scope questions

What size Kowa should I get and what distance will I be able to clearly see .308 holes? I am unsure if I should just spend 2300 for a leupold with a TMR or go with a scope with HD glass and a large objective.
