Hi all,

I have been looking for a carry gun for about a month now and have pretty much settled on 2. The Springfield Ultra Compact Loaded .45, and the EMP in 9mm.

The main thing I am wondering is if .45 is going to be too much punch in a 3.5" barrel. I like the design on the Ultra Compact more when holding it, but the reliability and performance of that .45 with a 3.5" barrel has me worried. What do you guys think?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Re: Springfield Ultra Compact or EMP

I have a Springfield Micro Operator (3inch aluminum frame, with rail) and it has been flawless and I have about 1000rds through it. I also had a EMP 9mm and was nice as well and VERY accurate. I really did like them both, with that said....when I needed some money to fund other projects the EMP went to the chopping block since I always grabbed for the 45 when I needed to carry. I really dont think you can go wrong with either, but be aware that some people have teething issues with the smaller 1911s.

If you want to have some reassurance look into a CCO style 1911. Its traditionally a 4.25 slide on a Officers frame but makers like Kimber use a 4inch slide. The slide is easy to conceal its the grip that prints.

Anyways if I had to choose between the two you have listed its the Ultra that would go home with me.

I carry a Kimber Ultra Super Carry. My 14 yo daughter shoots it. As long as you do not limp wrist it, it should run fine. Mine is accurate and after I shaved some errant metal off of the slide stop, no issues at all. I would go with the .45 personally, but that's my personal preference.

You might consider whether or not .45 ACP is very good in that barrel length or not as opposed to whether it's too much caliber in a gun of that size.

For me, it would be a toss-up. Probably end up with the EMP with magazines modified so that they were flush-fit, though.

Re: Springfield Ultra Compact or EMP

I carry the EMP 9mm and have no regrets.

No reason to carry a .45 when the 9mm is reliable and holds a few more rounds.

I would be reluctant to carry a 9mm 1911 if it wasn't a shortened action like the EMP, though.

One day, all 9mm/.40 1911s will be shortened actions like the EMP, I bet.
