+1 This is the direction I went and couldn't be happier! Just replace the stock and put some good glass on it and you will be good to go.

The aac-sd is also rifled 1:10" for the heavy weight bullets.

Re: SPS Tactical or Varmit ?

I have a Varmint, I got it because it was on the shelf when I felt like buying, and on sale. It was pretty muzzle heavy, until I mounted a scope and put it in a real stock, its not that bad now, but its no sporter.
Given the choice I'd go 26" again if its a factory tube, I want all the velocity I can get. I don't find a long rifle cumbersome to pack. I'm not going to be jumping deer, hogs, or bears out of the brush with a heavy barrel rifle.
1 in 12 or 1 in 10 is pretty irrelevent if you will be shooting bullets 180gr or lighter at normal velocities. .308s are far from needing a brake, if you intend to suppress, or shoot 180+gr bullets the AAC is a solid choice, otherwise you paid more for a name.

Re: SPS Tactical or Varmit ?

I bought the aac sd and I love it.
I put a H&S stock, a Mark 4 scope and a JP brake on it and it is a tack driver.

I had a Rem XCR LR tactical w/ a 26" barrel and it was just too freaking long and heavy.

don;t skimp on the stock or the glass and you will be happy.

This is an average 5 shot group @ 100 yards in the prone off of the bipod, shooting FED 168 SMK

Re: SPS Tactical or Varmit ?

SPS-T because of twiste rate and they're for the most part proven shooters but beyond that both have shit stocks and should be upgraded. I've had plenty of VLS, VS, and a couple SPS-T rifles (along with countless 700P's) over the years and they have performed well but for me the SPS-T is the easier choice.

The threaded barrel of the AAC is only welcome to the folks in can friendly states or if your going to use any other muzzle device.

Only my opinion.

Re: SPS Tactical or Varmit ?

Either route ya go as some have stated above a new stock is going to help immensely. Also either should come with the 1:10 from what I have seen. the AAC model has seemed to be the solid model as of late.

Re: SPS Tactical or Varmit ?

i feel the sps tac acc is hard to beat..You can replace the stock for $250 and your still under a grand. There are plenty of threads on this forum showing the potential for that rifle.

I bought an aac-sd off of here for $750 shipped with a RAD brake, Seekins 20 moa base, and tac ops bolt knob. $20 to my FFL. SOld the brake for $90, the rail for $90, and trying to get $30 for the knob.

Right now I have $590 into my aac-sd.

Bought an HS-precision from a 700p with bottom metal off of another sight for $225 shipped. Hoping to sell the bottom metal for $60 and my Hogue stock for $50. So I'll have $115 in the HS precision stock.

I'll be into the aac-sd with HS precision stock for $705, not too bad.

Why can't I find a deal like that

Sounds like a good way to go then. over here a AAC-SD costs about $1350 and a HS stock is about $550, So total cost of $1900. A 700P can be had for $1550.
I'm not planing on buying anything from the states, that would be way to hard, was just interested to know. I looked at a stack of different options recently and ended up ordering a 5R Mil-spec for $1630

Re: SPS Tactical or Varmit ?

I'm close to coryj's deal. I bought a SPS-T from this forum with a Badger bolt knob and sitting in a 700P stock. I paid $725 to my dealer . Sold the stock for $215 and the bottom metal for $40. So I have $470 in the barreled action with the Badger knob already installed.

Another +1 for the AAC

I loved mine before I had to sell it

Re: SPS Tactical or Varmit ?

If you reload even a SPS Tac will do fine (if you don't want to spend the extra money on it) if you reload though. Reason being is its not worth shooting ammo heavier than 175 SMK through a rifle with a 20" barrel. Some might way not true. But for me I have produced loads that I was able to push at 2700 FPS with 175 SMK bullets. Now If you can reload the loads to shoot over 2600 FPS accurately your good to go. I was able on one occasion to shoot a 2.56" group of 4-5 shots (can't remember right now) at 550 yards with my SPS Tac 1-12 twist barrel.

But for 1000 yards the Tac will handle it with no issues if you know how to shoot and do your part.

Close, but better! That's an awesome deal. It just shows it pays to be patient and be prepared to buy when a deal comes along.

Re: SPS Tactical or Varmint ?

I have the 26 inch Varmint , threaded with a brake and it is loonggg . Balance is not bad in the AIC stock with a pound and a half scope on it . The extra length , lets me load a little lighter and achieve the same velocities , lighter kick and soft on brass life . That said , I am rebarreling and plan on finishing at 22 . Its just a little to awkward to lug around

Re: SPS Tactical or Varmint ?

I am also hooked on these R700 20" barrels. Mine is a shooter also.
Sort tac 20" 1:12 twist
B&C A3 skim bedded
Timney 510 trigger 2.5 LBS.
SS10x42HD
Burris Tac Extrem rings and base
Harris Bipod swivle and notched legs
LOAD:Lapua or FGMM brass
CCI BR2
43 of RL15
175SMK HPBT
Muzzle VEL. 2472 FPS would like more velocity but shoots this load very well.
