Looking at picking up a new bolt gun and trying to decide between these two. Other than the stock is there any reason to pick the 5R over the tactical model. I hate the HS stock so there's no real plus for me there.

The tactical I can get for 570$ and the 5r runs around 1000$.

I don't want to get the varmint model as the 26" barrel was to long for my taste.

Ranges will mainly be out to 600 or so yards but usually less than that.

Re: SPS tactical vs 5r

Not from personal experience, but from what I have heard the 5R rifling is superior to the rifling you will find on the tactical.

5R = 1 in 11.25" twist
Tactical = (I don't remember, but it is something like) 1 in 11" or 1 in 12" twist

If I had the cash I would go for the 5R. Better yet find a 5R barreled action and then slap a stock on it and you would probably end up cheaper. IMHO.

Re: SPS tactical vs 5r

They are both great guns, If you plan on placing your own stock, trigger, bottom metel, etc. Go with the SPS-T and build it up from there. Don't be fouled by the advertizing, the 20" SPS is making it to 1000yds on a regular basis.

Yeah for sure!! I have the SPS-T and have taken it out to 1200 on steel, 1K on paper, and nice round holes with 175gr SMKs. I'm getting 1/2MOA out of it too. For $550, pretty tough to beat

Re: SPS tactical vs 5r

Yes, the 5R barrel does have a few advantages.

The groove profile uses a different shoulder between the lands and grooves which is easier to clean in my experience, a slightly shorter twist rate which results in improved rotational stability of the 308 round, and in my experience frankly the action is of a higher quality than other 700s I have had experience in.

The official line from Remington is they dont do anything different on the action. I dont have hard data I can give you to "prove" it but qualitatively I think they spend more time on the action or are more careful with it as it is a limited run item. SOMETHING is different because I have never had an out of the box 700 P/PSS/SPS, even pre-hedge-fund that was as smooth or accurate from round #1 as the 5R I owned.

With ALL that being said, I think that there is a lot more hype in the 5-R than it really is worth. Go with the SPS or 700 P. Build it up over time into the rifle that you want to shoot and in the meantime, shoot the hell out of it and continue to develop your skills.

Re: SPS tactical vs 5r

If you need something to hold you over untill you do a custom build on it, then go for the SPS-T. But if you want a rifle you dont have to do a whole lot to and keep it the way it is, go for the 5R.

Re: SPS tactical vs 5r

the SPS T is what I was leaning towards.

For the 500 or so dollar price difference I can do everything I want to the SPS T. I actually like the stock on it....just needs some stiffining up front. Or throw it in a Manners and be done with it.

A Timney Trigger, Williams bottom metal, and a few hundred rounds of 175smk's will do me a lot better than the 5R I think.

Just wanted to make sure that there isn't something I was missing.

Re: SPS tactical vs 5r

Across the board, the 5R might shoot slightly better than the SPS. But if you are a regular shooter in tac matches, you'll be replacing the barrel either way within a couple years. Then you'll be even up. If you don't like the HSPrecision stock on the 5R, then IMO it's not worth the extra ~$500 over the SPS, for the modest improvement in accuracy.

Re: SPS tactical vs 5r

Just purchased sps tac. Tax and all under $600. I have only ran around 50 rnds, but it is (so far) one of the best deals for the money I have found. Sat I will have a shoot off against a Laredo 300wm and a 1968 Sako .243. The Laredo 26" bull with Boss sys was my prior fav. Then on to custom loads. Starting with Berger 155 VLD's. Does just great with cheap store ammo , with sub MOA @ 100yrds using Sightron BSII 4-16.

Just my exp.
And Hello to all, as I'm new to the board.
