Having a tough time deciding which one to get for my needs. I will not need this optic for anything inside of 200 yds so far as hunting goes, as it's going to be on a dedicated target rifle set-up. I've searched this thread that's full of some great info, but still would like a recommendation from you all on this. For some reason, I think that the 10x42M would be fine, but is the "16" something that I should consider? My understanding is that both optics, are accurate with regards to their mil reading when used to determine yardage, correct?

Thanks for your help!

I would get the 10x. 16x is getting up there and the fact that you will not be able to turn it down on the hot days to reduce the mirage a little would be a possible problem. Plus the exit pupil is a lot smaller so the image will look a lot darker with the 16 vs the 10x.

Lots of people really like the 16x but it would not be my choice for that distance.

I shoot a 16X SS and a 16X MK4. Mirage usually doesn't get too bad, but then again the desert southwest at 100+* may not be as bad as a more humid climate at 90*....

Thanks ~ The possibility of dealing with mirage is the one variable (aside from a reduced f.o.v.)that is leaving me unsure about going to a higher magnification level...

I owned both 10x and 16x SS scopes. I used both to shoot at a 10" steel swinger target at 1000 yds. Both would work. I have shot when 16x wasn't doable because the mirage was too bad. The 16x is also much darker than the 10x. If it was me I would get the 10x SS. If you can afford it, The 3-9 SS would probably be worth the extra $300.
