I have a Savage stevens 7.08 rifle, with LW heavy stainlass barrel 1:9 twist. I have bought a SWFA SS 10x42 Tactical Riflescope.
I will use this rifle for 10" steel target shooting at 300 - 800 meters.
I need to choose a scope base. Do I buy a 0 MOA or a 20 Moa base ?
I dont understand the full concept of this yet, so please bear with me.

Re: Standard or 20moa scope base ?

i would say with the SS you have a lot of adjustment already but if you have to have a base and you could get the 20 moa for the same cost why not go with that. i dont know the ballistics of that round but id say you probably have enough adjustment with the scope alone?

btw the concept of the canted base is to allow you to get more range out of the scope. if your scope has like 100 moa you only have 50 moa to adjust down for range but with say a 20 moa base it will give you 20 moa more of your scopes adjustment to use at longer ranges so you would have 70 moa to hit those far targets.

btw if im wrong about the adjustment on the scope and only having half of the overall adjustment someone please correct me because i dont want to be giving false info.

You might need to build up the stock or have an adjustable cheek piece with the 20 moa base. Just something else to factor in your decision. i would figure the furthest range you ever think you will shoot, figure if you have enough adjustment in your scope for the load you are shooting. Also, consider if you are near the end of your scope elevation adjustment, you won't have as much windage where you might need it most.

Re: Standard or 20moa scope base ?

My experience with the SWFA scope is that it has over 100 moa of elevation. This should be more than enough for you to hit 800 meters. Depending on how your gun is set up, you should easily be able to go out to 1000 yards with that scopes built in adjustment.

You only need about 40 moa of up elevation from your zero to get out to around 1000 yards. Some of the SWFA scopes I have measured are over 120 moa. so you should be set.

By not getting the 20 moa base, you should be able to keep your overall cost down by not having to buy a cheek piece and in most cases, a new set of rings for the scope. I would suggest a Karsten adjustable cheek piece if you do need one. Karsten is good to go and he takes really good care of his clients.

Good Luck

Re: Standard or 20moa scope base ?

I went through the same a few months back. The general answer that made since to me was.

"Get the 20 moa. Even if you don't need it you'll have it and the chances of any scope not zeroing at 100yds with a 20 moa base is almost non existant"

EGW is a cheaper good quality base that alot of people run.

20 MOA base will keep you closer to the center of you scopes adjustment range when shooting. This should give the best optical performance from the optic.
