Watching Starship Troopers on Netflix. Haven't watched in years. I forgot how much I loved this movie. Going to have to dig through my storage unit and find the book to reread. On a side note, if we win the seemingly inevitable Civil War that's just on the horizon, I think we could learn a thing or two about what citizenship really means.

That's not how a truly "equal" force would work. Think same P.T. standards across the board. There would be very few women and they'd be jacked.

Denise Richards was smoking hot back then.

The movie is almost as close to the opposite of the book as you can get, with only a few of the plot characteristics and names being the same.
Sorry to disappoint you but there won't be any of that co-ed stuff in the book.

That being said, it actually came out surprisingly good in it's own right despite being originally conceived as a parody put down on the idea of the military being important.

I don't actually agree with the prime premise that your society basically should be ruled by the military and those that served in it only, because history has shown that actually is a problem long term, however the points it brings up are very important and valid.

I also object to some of the things like the stupid notion that it is better to let the ship be destroyed and the battle lost rather than take initiative and save the day. Because apparently "just follow orders exactly" and let the enemy win, is better somehow better than actually saving the captain, saving the ship and winning the battle.... But that's why I don't fit in with the "just following orders" crowd perfectly.

I do think it is a very important book that should be on the reading list for anybody who is of the freedom bent and also who wants to be part of rebuilding society into something better, as it makes some excellent points. Such as, the war does not end till everybody comes home, every single one.

If I was living in that world, I would have joined the military as one of the ones partnered with the dogs.

she was hotter in that movie with the two girls in the pool that were kissing wild things movie stunk but that scene was hot .

It was originally a standalone Sci-Fi story with no connection to "Starship Troopers", and Verhoeven (who grew up in Nazi occupied Netherlands) helped transform it into a film about the dangers of fascism.

In 1959 the gender equality aspect was much bigger and much more divisive. There were very few women in the MI because they couldn't cut the physicality of it. There were very few male star ship pilots because the women were better "decision makers and had faster reflexes". Total gender equality with no politically correct bullshit to distort it. True equality, which at this point has been made a complete mockery of by the left.

I've always been totally onboard that citizenry should be subject to service (2 years), and only once that service is complete with a honorable discharge can one claim citizenship. Heinlein makes it clear that service doesn't only mean military, it must necessarily entail danger and discipline. You get every right we have except you can't vote or hold office if you don't have an honorable discharge (military gets no vote while serving). Heinlien was very opposed to conscription. He thought that if a nation could not find sufficient volunteers to defend it that it did not deserve to survive. Even if you don't agree there is a lot to consider.

In Heinlein's world there was a radical Left who despised the military and despised citizens, but they had zero say. Today we elevate the mentally disturbed and criminals into heroes and leaders. People claim their own reality is as valid as the one we all share.

I think the movie's contribution was showing how a totalitarian government lies and is full of propaganda...Want To Know More?

I watched the 1997 movie entertained by it but at the same time extremely disappointed. The lack of the power armor and drop capsules that figured so largely in the book was a crusher. It did include the most important points of the "History and Moral Philosophy" parts.

I agree with those saying the book and the movie are totally different.
For one thing, the book was one of Heinlien's "Juvenile" books, Sci Fi meant for young boys. The closest anybody got to females on board, was when Rico stands watch outside the door of the cockpit (appropriately named).
The movie was cartooonish, the colors garish, the presentation of much of it was almost comedically stupid.
As a SciFi purist, I thought the adaption was too far removed from the book, and that the book was probably a poor subject for making into a movie.
And, yeah, the lack of drop ships and armor were a vast hole in the movie.

Paul Verhooven(Robocop) shot a scifi movie, bought the movie rights to the book, renamed his movie and shot a few new scenes to tie the movie to the book. Good book, fun movie, little similarity.
