I love the old Springfield Unertl combo! I've never personally seen one. It be cool to clone, probably super rare and expensive to own an actual one!
What scope change are you talking about regarding the m40a5- Change from S&B? I've heard NF supposedly had a multi-service contract for sniper scopes on a limited basis, Marines were included but not sure if they were for the m40 or for the mk11 semiauto. Is this what your refering to or is it something else? S&Bs are nice, it be interesting if its true there's a change away from the S&B. </div></div>
The Sprinfield Unertl is really nice. I saw one, all correct from nose to tail (star barrel, correct front sight and hood, all mods, scope, mounts, stock) at a gun show about 10 years ago for around $5,000. The guy had quite a few sniper rifles of different national origon and services. I regret not buying it still. As a former USMC S/S, I always had nostalgia.
The M40A1, both with the Redfield (in school) and the Unertl 10x (got them right after we graduated) was my rifle. Having shot them out to 1200 yards, with far below minute of angle accuracy (I was very, very good and well trained) I am still in awe of what we were able to do with that rifle. The weakest part of the system was the shooter. the rifle was absolutely better than any human who got behind it. Respect to the 2112's who put them together.
a Springfield with the Winchester scope, circa 1918, would be a hell of a find, but likely unobtainable these days.
