Do you have any friends that shoot long guns? Or buddies that hunt? Especially the hunting thing, having dudes that you know walk you through some of the basics is a big help.
As far as starting out, I got my first bolt gun this year. I read a lot, looking back into archived posts and found as much information as I could on what I thought I was going to do. I also reached out to some friends that have been reloading longer than Ive been able to vote, and got their opinions on things. Then I went out and shot and when I was done with that, I reloaded what I had shot. I learned a lot of shit the hard way, and those are the lessons that will stick with me the best.
As it was said above, get a reloading manual. Read it. Be smart, you are setting off a small explosion right next to your face.
6.5 kicks ass. My friend got a 6.5 Bergara HMR, same rifle as mine but I have a .308. His rifle has been far easier to get to 1000. And it recoils like an AR.
Get a chronograph.
