One day Field Shooting Workshop / Train-Up for the Steel Safari.

Saturday May 14, 2011. We'll add another if the first one fills up.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The Steel Safari is a non-standard contest that examines practical rifle skills, including target recognition, range estimation, wind doping, trail skills, and marksmanship. It is designed to test a competitor's skills shooting rifle in practical challenges in the natural terrain using what gear he can carry. The Steel Safari is one of the premier field matches in the country, and the 2011 match sold out in one day.

The Steel Safari Train Up - Field Shooting Workshop is a one-day class taught by match director Zak Smith and other prior-year Steel Safari champions. Students will be split into very small groups and then guided along last year's Steel Safari field course. At every station, you'll learn the best methods to locate, range, and hit the targets under the time constraints. In addition, your small-group instructor will go over general Steel Safari strategy, hints, and tricks, as well as equipment.

This one-day workshop is a unique opportunity to "tune up" before the match or simply learn from the pros how to approach long-range field shooting. </div></div>

Re: Steel Safari Train Up and Field Shooting Workshop

We just made it back to the hotel after a great day of training. Zak and the TBAC Training Group did a great job introducing the students to practical precision long range shooting with an emphasis on the technique and "secrets" needed to be successful at the Steel Safari. Everyone that attended appreciated the train-up and commented that the train up will be a significant benefit to their Steel Safari experience.

I'll get some pics up later.

Re: Steel Safari Train Up and Field Shooting Workshop

Workshop was very helpful. I'd never been to the Blue Steel Ranch. Awesome facility.

I've frequently heard the Steel Safari referred to as the "Sporting Rifle Match on steroids". I think that's pretty accurate.

Lodging in Logan was great. I stayed at the Budget Inn Express the first night and the Best Western Discovery Inn in Tucumcari the 2nd night. Surprisingly (?) the Budget Inn Express was actually much nicer.

Weather couldn't have been much better. DA around 5500' most of the day.

The location is pretty remote. Fortunately there is cellular and AT&T Edge coverage for most / all of it. The initial start was delayed an hour or so as the instructors "walked" lost parties in.

We broke out into ~3 groups with some overlap along the way.

Zak lead my group. We started out slow. Working as a group to locate and range targets. Eventually progressing throughout the day to mock competition with a holding area and each student acting as an RO. I shot about 80rds.

Zak observed each shooter throughout and offered constructive criticism and advise based on his experience and knowledge of practical shooting in general and the Steel Safari in particular.

Several of us met up Saturday night for dinner at Del's Restaurant on historic Route 66 in Tucumcari. Would give it maybe 1 out of 5 stars for being able to seat us rather quickly, and service wasn't bad. My entree (red chile pork enchiladas) was bland and tasteless. Chips weren't particularly good and salsa wasn't good at all. Oh, and no bar. Thumbs down.

Hit a turkey vulture that took out the passenger-side mirror on the otherwise boring ~4.5hr drive home.

Re: Steel Safari Train Up and Field Shooting Workshop

Mike,

Thanks for coming.

Bad luck on the mirror! I hit two small birds on the way back but no avian evidence was left on the truck.

Just FYI, in the morning we were only delayed about 15-20 minutes due to late arrivals. We still had to do sign-in and the briefing.

Agreed on the restaurant. I thought it was about on par or a little worse than the Annex (ie Logan's only place to eat dinner).

The weather we had was really unseasonably cool. The SS in 3 weeks will be roughly 20-30 degrees hotter!

It was a good trainup. We'll be scheduling more field shooting classes at this venue in the future.
