I've been looking to buy some steel targets with stands. I can't believe how expensive some of the regular gongs with stands are. I was thinking of making my own. Is there anything special about the ones that are for sale on target websites or is it just a stand, a gong, and a chain (or some form of swinging attatchment)?

Re: steel targets

i just used a 1/2 in thick 10"x10" steel plate welded to a hollow tube then u make 2 sets of leg that look like an (A) with round tube on each of them then when u set it up run a solid bar on the inside of the three other bars and that holds it all up and u have a swinging steel target

Re: steel targets

here this is it this one isnt as think as our 1/2 inch thick one but its still good if your shooting 308 at 200yd or more

most of the hits are with a ar15 223 but the ( HI ) was with 22lr at 50yd

Re: steel targets

That 1 looks cool. I was just wondering if it had to be a certain weight to still swing or if a certain metal thickness/thinness will cause more ricochets. I don't have a welder so I'm kind of at a disadvantage but I'll figure out something. Mainly I want to make sure it has a nice loud "ding", cause it will be out there pretty far.

Re: steel targets

I didn't think about that, it's probably real hard to hear at 1K in the wind. If I can't hear it I'll just use the spotting scope I'm getting. It's not the best but it will be able to see that at least.

Re: steel targets

very true guys good point and might i add we never used it paste 550 and it was no wind so i dont know what it would be like in wind but i might go ahead and replace the bars with chains.

we where thinking of laeving it as is but add skateboard bearings to it to help it swing freely

Re: steel targets

Setting it up properly like the one shown in the picture, you can hear the the impact at 1K or even at 1 mile, if the wind is not blowing away from you.

Re: steel targets

There are a few guys on here that sell AR500 plate for a decent price. Then you can just build your stand. You'll have a better plate than if you build it yourself with regular steel and it won't cost too much more.

Re: steel targets

I never bought from e bay but they have these

The problem i run into even useing thick steel is its just to soft. After a few hits it looks like the moon. Maybe you could case harden it in a fire then cool it in oil?

Re: steel targets

You can get away with thinner steel on chains. The ability to swing freely in basically any direction disipates alot of the force directed onto the steel. It usually really jumps around when hit, making it easier to see hits at long range. We generally use 12" plates. and can see hits well past 1000 meters. My hearing sux so I don't really depend on it much.

Re: steel targets

I've reciently tried snow plow blades. They are 8" wide, 36" tall and 1" thick. I picked them up from the DOT guys that I know and welded two together, so they're 16" wide, 36" tall and 1" thick. I stick them out at 800 to 1000yds, and they're still to big. But I can't cut them really easily because they have a tungsten insert on the leading edge of the blade so it doesn't wear out and you can't cut through it.

just an idea.

A plasma cutter will do it. If you dont have one find a welder.

Re: steel targets

I picked up a 3/8 ar500 12x12 square off ebay for around 50 shipped. It's easily portable and in low wind at 700m (close to 800 yards?) it makes a hell of ping. 7.62x39 with steel insert only slightly deform it at 100 at SMKs out of a 300wsm only splash the paint.
