Putting an optic on an AR-10 in 308. I originally wanted to spend around $2k but have realized I can probably get more than I need for now in the $1k-$1.5k range. I have been looking at the the 3-15 and 5-25 models of both the T5xi and the XTR ii with the SCR reticles. I understand that Burris owns Steiner but I'm not sure how to factor that into my choice. I'm really leaning towards the Steiner T5xi 3-15 w/ SCR reticle because 15x on top seems like enough for the AR-10 and I like the size/weight. This will be my first high magnification optic at the $1k+ price mark and I am having trouble making a final decision on anything. I'm thinking that the T5xi is a good place to start and best case will be something I can use for years to come, or worst case something that I can sell for a small loss. Knowing myself, I could end up researching optics for the next year and never end up purchasing something, so I would like to get the ball rolling and mount something this month.

Thoughts, pros/cons, etc. regarding: A) the T5xi vs XTR ii, and B) 3-15 vs 5-25?

I think the Steiner is an excellent choice. They are both solid optics, but you will have an improvement in glass with the T5Xi, as well as a 56mm objective and a pretty cool indicator turret.

I really think the 3-15 is an excellent choice for a AR10 in 308. I ran a 16x on my 308 SASS for years. Great combination of size and magnification range.

The Burris will save you some shekels and be a very good scope, can't go wrong with either. But between the two, the honest answer is the Steiner.
Birddog is right on this one!
