Gunsmithing Stevens bolt head swap

Re: Stevens bolt head swap

That's the correct bolt head, but you'll also need all the small parts to go with it. Extractor, extractor ball, extractor spring, ejector, ejector spring, and ejector pin.

You'll also need a new magazine. The 223 has a spacer in it.

Thanks for the reply geargrinder

Just looked up those parts on midway and wouldn't alot of those parts already be on the 223 bolt/head.

Yes, they will all swap except the extractor. The 223 extractor is longer.

I always buy new small parts when I get a new bolt head. It's just easier to swap complete bolt heads.

If you do strip your 223 bolt head down, I'm looking for a 223 extractor.

Re: Stevens bolt head swap

you by chance don't have a 308 extractor do yah? If not I will let you know when I change them out, and just to clarify I only need a 308 extractor.

Just looked at midway again and the extractor is for all top loading all calibers. So wouldn't I just change over the extractor also?

Re: Stevens bolt head swap

I know Midway says that, so does Savage's parts finder. But they are different. 204/223 extractor is the odd-ball. All of the standard and magnums use the same extractor.

Here's a picture.

PM me your address and I'll send you the extractor.

Re: Stevens bolt head swap

The forward baffle may need to be changed as well.
I believe the .223 baffle has an extension on it to reduce rearward bolt travel. The one for .308/.260 does not.

You can modify the old one......just score the extension with a file and break off the extension. File the broken joint smooth and you now have a .308/.260 baffle.

Depending on what you have and the bolthead you replace it with; the firing pin and bolt-head retainer pin may need to be changed too.

None of this is hard to do, but you have to put together the correct parts.
