Ok guys I got something for ya. I have got a Steyr Safebolt "SBS" I want to build off of. Has anyone done it? I'm not a fan of the cheese dick safety on it but other than that it seems pretty ok. Let the feeding frenzy of opinions begin!!!

Re: Steyr Build

I have a steyr SSG04 and it has one of the smoothest actions I have ever felt on a factory gun. It shoots better than I do and is very consistant. I would imagine if you were to accurize it, it would only get better....My $.02

You can check with McMillan for stocks but I dont think you'll find too much other accessories. I had heard that the barrels are not threaded into the receiver but are pressed in? If that is the case not too many places are going to mess with them for you if you ever want a barrel change.

Re: Steyr Build

Steyr's are already sub-MOA shooters with smooth actions, great triggers and long life barrels. You say cheese dick safety, but the safety is what the whole rifle is names after Safe Bolt System (SBS).

You would be better off building custom on another platform.

Re: Steyr Build

Have the mcmillan stock. Best investment/upgrade I ever did.

Based off the A3 platform, real comfortable, and eliminated that cheesy ass grey plastic that flexes easily. I was having contact with the barrel which caused stringing occasionally. After having it bedded into the newer Mcmillan stock, my groups tightened to a consistent 3/4 MOA with factory 168 fgmm at 200.
Got a nice 33/33/33 custom molded cammo with black, tan,od that came out nice. And the great thing about the stock is you get the anschutz rail on bottom if you want to put two or more sling studs. Also you can have them mold in side mounted flushcups for your sling if desired. Fixed a lot of small irks I had with the factory stock.

Also, theres a steyr scout fan webpage where the guy can do a few small things to the bolt to ease the bolt lift action. The action is already smooth, but its that initial bolt lift that was pissing me off. Sent it to him, he installed some new cams and now its a lot smoother.
