I have a SSG with a Swavorski 6x42 in Steyr rings. I wanted to switch to a Super Sniper MOA/MIL, so I ordered the Steyr 30 mm rings. When I got it all dialed in I found that the rings were too high and I couldn't keep a solid/consisten cheek weld to the gun.

Now I'm looking at a set of Talley rings and a rep tells me they are .650" from contact point with the reciver to the bottom scope cradle. I've compaired the measurment to the ring height on the Swavorski and its pretty close. Now my question to you guys is; should I go with the Talley rings and hope for the best or go with the U.S. Optics picitanny rail and have the smith drill and tap the reciver for it?

Re: Steyr SSG/Optics mounting options

I would not go for the rail, If you are worried about the height there is no reason the add that to the building height.
I would go for something that fits to the current rail instead to keep a lower and more stable mount.
I see no gain in Picatinny as it just adds height, screws (possible loose screws)and in this case unneccesary machining.

If you add a rail you'll have more options. XS Sights also makes a rail (so you have another option). I used the Talley and they worked but still would have prefered the rail. Before you go out and buy new rings you may want to consider a stock pack if you're not already using one.

The Steyr mfg rail.... no cant. $120 plus postage from Pja Investments. I just bought one for my SSG69. I had Tally SSG1 rings on my SSG and considered them pretty high. The Steyr rail with low rings is, to me, much more user friendly and lessens neck strain

So $120 and the cost of having your smith drill and tape for the screws?

Your right, I like the idea of having less peices between the rings and gun. The problem is I'm having trouble finding rings that are nice and low for a 30 mm tube diameter.

No.... No drilling. It's made to snick onto the receiver grooves and there are 4 Torx set screws that tighten down from the top to immobilize it.
