So? Do I have a tight chamber? Dirty brass? Both? Frustrating putting the cleaning rod down the bore to pop a case out after 10-15 rounds.

My slow but accurate load of 89gr retumbo, fgm 215 and 300 gr lapua and smk(mainly lapua) soots the necks up and seems to cause the most problems.

Factory Lapua seems to keep the necks clean and shoot very well until it too fouls after 20+ . Frustrating as f$$%%^K.

Should I?

1: Be more diligent about cleaning the throat area of this gun?

2: Better brass prep? Both?

3: I try to do both well but I'm still newish at this so HELP is appreciated!

4: Use as a home defense club? it's f'ing heavy enough lol!

5: This may be the answer I will get and am willing to spend a few bucks to try and resolve this issue. Stainless media and a ultrasonic setup?

Thanks,
Bill

You might be able to find my post on this in the reloading section. Before you do anything else, find a smith with a set of go gauges and have him or her check it out. I was sticking cases at 88.5 grains of Retumbo with 300 Scenars and 300 Berger Hybrids. The go gauge told us that the chamber was too short by far. The smith unscrewed the barrel a few thousandths and like magic I can shoot all the way to up to 95 grains with no problem.

Give it a try..

Re: Sticky bolt 110be 338lm

I'm usually letting off 5 shot groups and they are not rapid fire by any means. Shooting aprox my 5th-20th rounds (reloads) is when I get sticky.

Any pointers on how long I should let the barrel cool?

I would like to think it could be shot (all day) without problems keeping in mind not to be overheating it.

Thanks for the Q!

Re: Sticky bolt 110be 338lm

Had the same problem with my 110ba. Bolt lift was better with us869, but still tight. Out of frustration i sold it. But my bet is that shakofy is spot on. I had all the symptoms you speak of.

Re: Sticky bolt 110be 338lm

I am getting this also in my 110FCPHS,,I cant go past 89 grs H1000 and 300 gr bullets,,and 91 grs H1000 and the 250`s,,

I have been debating a Shilen pre fit stainless barrel ,,the rifle shoots very well as long as you are about 4-5 grs below book max,

Re: Sticky bolt 110be 338lm

my fcp is also undergoing this problem, i thought it was the hornady brass, i switched to nosler custom and found the same problem. i switched to lapua and i am going try triming a lil more off the case and a strict chamber cleaning regiment to see if it helps any.

Checking and/or reheadspacing a Savage is an easy job. Appropriate gunsmith can knock this out in 15 minutes.
If you want to really learn how theat rifle works, it is actually a DIY.

A snip from savageshooters.com:
"I spoke with a tech at PTG today after another fruitless conversation with Savage Customer Service. Apparently Savage runs fast and loose with headspace dimensions and the tech was very familiar with the 110BA problems. He suggested setting the barrel back to "go" gauge and then rethroating forward .060". I ordered a reamer and we'll see what happens. At this point I've got nothing to lose since I'm about to buy a Shilen barrel for the rifle. I'll keep you posted. If the reamer works I've saved $450.00.
I also switched to Lapua brass (both commercial and military), and it helped, but I can't get over 2650fps without bolt extraction problelms.
That round should be capable of 2950fps with a 250gr projectile since that's what the Lapua military ammo does."

Good deal.
Youtube has a couple of good videos on how to do it.
And if you don't get the headspace right on the first try, just unscrew the nut and try again.

Re: Sticky bolt 110be 338lm

I am having this issue too, although not at that low of powder charges. It still sucks having to pop brass out with a cleaning rod though. I will try the headspace and see if it helps. Thanks guys
