Sticky round?

I have a Remmy 700 with a Broughton barrel on an A5 stock chambered in 6mmBR. I'm using Lapua brass, 108gr. Berger bullets with 29.3gr. of H4895, and CCI450 primers. I've reloaded these brass about 12 times now.

My problem is, after I fire the round and open the bolt it sticks when I pull the bolt back to eject the empty round. This seems to happen on just about every round. I bump the shoulder back after every other reload so the round goes in easily. I don't have this problem with new brass. Have I overused this batch of brass? Should I be concerned?

Also, on some of the brass during reloading, I have trouble putting the brass in the holder. They "snap" into the holder and I have a hard time pulling the brass out of the holder. It seems to indicate a bulge at the base of the brass. I don't believe I'm loading these hot, am I?

Re: Sticky round?

+1 on the small base die, once and a while a minimum spec chamber will be cut so that a "standard" FL die will not reduce the lower portion of the case at all making them stick like you describe.

You can check this by measuring a fired case right above the head of the case before and after sizing. Annealing will not help this as you do not want to anneal this portion of the case.

On the other hand, snapping into the shell holder after being reloaded 12 times is almost a sure sign that the head of the case is expanded. Might be due to hot loads, softer brass or a combination of things. Usually the primer pockets are loose as well and when that is the case, I say its time for new brass.

No, I don't FL resize, just the neck.

Re: Sticky round?

I would FL size a few and see what kind of results you get. You don't have to crush them all the way down, just set the die to bump the shoulder back a couple thousandths. You should get some body sizing from that and it will ease your chambering effort.

On my factory Remington chamber there is a noticeable difference in locking the bolt on a twice fired and three times fired case that has only been neck sized.

Re: Sticky round?

I don't think I have ever gotten to 12.

I have a crapload of once fired stuff. I still have FC brass from the last school I went to that I haven't tumbled.

You don't FL resize and you are wondering why the cases are getting sticky? Come on man....lol. Even benchrest shooters FL resize when they get brass issues. If you have a standard F/L die, then use it and make sure the shoulder is getting bumped enough: measure before and after. Chances are you'll be back to shooting like normal with that brass. IF you got some sort of chambering with tight body dimensions, you may need to use a small base die. But I wouldn't worry about that unless a standard F/L die does not get it done.

As I mentioned, I neck size and use a body die to bump the shoulder. Isn't that equivalent to using a FL die?

Re: Sticky round?

If your cartridge is sticky after firing, then you are clearly not resizing some part of the case enough. A F/L die with proper amount of shoulder bump should fix that problem. You state that the cases are not sliding into the shellholder: indicating expansion of the case at the base/web. This is indicative of over-pressure rounds. If you are running really high pressure rounds then don't expect long brass life. Diagnose this issue by measuring new brass case head dimensions compared to your fired brass. Most folks using 6BR have F/L dies. They might not use them every firing, but have them for "when needed." I'd suggest you get one if you don't have it. As mentioned, verify the shoulder bump is adequate.

Re: Sticky round?

op states the bolt is sticky when he goes to eject the fire case.....nothing about a hard bolt lift

he also says some of the cases snap into the shell holder.

i would find the cases that snap in the shell holer and see if these are the ones that are hard to eject.....

i run 30gn of varget in my 6br....the case head on 9 time fired measure .470/.471 and the bottom of the extractor groove measures .405/.406
