Gunsmithing Stock before barrel or same time?

Hey all,

I would like to get a different stock on my Rem 700. I am looking at the B&C Varminter. My only concern is I know in the future I want to go with a bull barrel. Will mounting the factory action and barrel in the .920 width stock cause problems? I am thinking the bedding may not match up??

With Rem CorLokt ammo I shout about 1.5MOA at 100 yards, I tried some Hornady Match and got 3 shot group of 0.66" at 100. So I know the gun can shoot, I just want a better stock to improve check weld and havea more comfortable grip.

Thanks!

Re: Stock before barrel or same time?

The most bang for your buck up front is the stock and a good bedding job. You don't know what the potential of you barrel is at this point. There are too many variables to point a finger at anything and a new stock with a good bedding job is a good improvement.

Yes. You can have a large gap between bbl and stock forend (in front of the recoil lug)without effecting accuracy.

There are great bedding "how to" threads here if you search. The bedding from the tang to the recoil lug is what matters.
