I just picked up my 700 sps tactical and I need a new stock. How is the Bell & Carlson Varmint stock? (the one that comes on 700p guns) I found stockys stocks has them for $218, seems like a goood price, any opinions? thanks, Joe

Re: stock for my 700

It's a decent stock, the 700P, but IMHO if you have the resources to get an adjustable McMillan, AI, or something similar you'll cut right through the chase. Yes they're a lot if $. But they're worth it.

Yes I've had the sps, yes I've had the 700P, and now having a few higher end adjustable stocks, the ability to get perfect behind the scope & rifle is well like getting behind a hot chick compared to a hog. It makes getting the job done much easier and enjoyable...

However the 700P stock will hold much better groups than your factory stock, and it will work although it takes more effort to get it done right.
Manners stocks are good too, my buddy loves his manners stocks.

Re: stock for my 700

If you can afford to go with a manners or mcmillan that would be my suggestion.

Will a Bell & Carlson get the job done, yes. For far less money?

B&C for 218
bedding 200
detachable bottom metal 300
Total 718

Manners mini chassis for a little over 800.

Something to think about.

Re: stock for my 700

I have a B & C and like it well. But as mentioned, I am not sure I would do it all over again. Like previously said, after you are done bedding and bottom metal, you could be getting into a chassis. Like I said--I like mine, but....

Re: stock for my 700

Bedding is not a requirement as well as a DBM is not a requirement unless doing a activity that could or would benefit from it or if accuracy of gun is not meeting the shooters expectations.

A B&C stock thats inletted for a 700 action...as long as it meets or exceeds the shooters expectations then bedding is not at that point a requirement but a want. So that alone can save 200 Dollars.

A DBM is not needed from what i understand unless in competitions where you need the quick reload ability or if you just want the quick reload capability. The factory gun can be reloaded somewhat fast using internal box mag. A DBM is approx 300 dollars plus lets say 50 dollars to inlet the stock.

So its possible to save 550 dollars on items that for the most part are "wants" and no "needs" unless you have a situation that would benefit from those add-ons.

So the extra money you could possibly save could be used for high-end stock or better trigger or better optic.

I agree with this post 100%. I was just thinking of how the progression of these things go. Right now it may not be a need, but in a couple months you might be kicking yourself in the butt wishing you had just bought a manners or mcmillan.

I bought an HS as my first after market stock and at the time it was great but over time I learned it was one of the worst purchases I ever made when I lost big time trying to sell it. JMO

Re: stock for my 700

thanks for the advice so far guys. My needs are simply as a hobbyist, I shoot at 600 yds, and I doubt if it will be much further ( I live in Vermont, not Arizona) I budgeted 1200-1400 bucks for a precision rifle. Im running a ss10x hd scope on an egw base with egw rings. I have a harris bipod i switch from other guns. Im really not looking to spend a ton of money on this gun, and I want lots of bang for the buck.
I understand the law of diminishing returns, and want to maximize performance/investment. thanks, Joe
