I am building up a Winchester Model 70 is 300 WSM and I have heard some things about the WSM action being a different length than the standard short action. So what I'm asking is, can I buy a stock for a M70 short action or does it have to be made specifically for a WSM action? Thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry dude:

Yes, your stuck buying a stock specifically for a WSM action.

WSM is roughly 1/2" longer bolt spacing and feels wider but I haven't measured it yet.

Tactical Liquidators carries McMillan blanks that you can have inletted specifically for your action. I've got a blank A5 sitting next to me right now for my 6.5 WSM build.

The best way to get an answer to this question would be to inquire with the manufacturer of the stock that you are interested in. I bet a quick PM to hide member Thomas Manners (of Manners Composite Stocks) would clarify any questions that you have. FWIW I believe my GAP 7 WSM action has the same footprint as other R700 short actions.

I'll do you one better - It bolts right in.
