F T/R Competition Stock Options/Opinions for a new NE shooter

So, my barreled action is being built. The receiver is a Win 70 short action with a Rock 30" heavy palma taper barrel. Caliber is .240NMC. Jewel trigger. SIII 6-24x50 scope.

Up next I am working on what stock to purchase for the rifle for shooting F Open. I do plan on going to the April F Class meeting at ENGC since work precluded me from going to the last match of the year in 2011.

Would you guys care to give me your thoughts regarding what stock would be a wise choice to get please. I am open to researching any suggestions you may have.

And will be looking to get a new stock for it to potentially use in F Open as well. So thoughts on that would be appreciated also.

You might want to pose the same question over at accurateshooter.com. I can say with the. 240NMC you will be in the open division. The. 240NMC loves VV-N150 and I would seriously look at the Berger 105 hybrid bullet, somewhere around 36.0 grains should be the ticket (I was using 36.5 grains with the SIE107 moly'd). Did you have Randy do the work on the chambering?

Thank you for the info sir! Yes sir, Randy is doing the barrel and action work for me. Got turned on to him by another friend that knows him really well. Looking forward to shooting it on the line and at a few pdogs and coyotes around here. Already got 1100 .22-250 brass in and that should do me for a little while.

I will check out that site. Never been there before...oh boy, another forum to learn from! NICE!

Are you still shooting the .240? Did it perform well for you as I hear it has for so many others?

Can't really help you much with suggestions for an F-Open stock. As a former member of ENGC, I can say that there are a few shooters using 6BRs for F-Open (and doing quite well), so your choice should work just fine. ENGC puts on a great match, although this will be the first year for F-Class as a separate match. Your idea of attending the F-Class clinic at the end of April is a very good one. You will be able to get some useful data, maybe even start to get a read on wind conditions prior to the first match in May. I'm planning on flying back for that match, it should be a lot of fun. Hopefully I'll see you there!

Well, I called PR&T today and talked to Ray. He said they don't do stocks for Win 70 actions because "no one shoots model 70's in F class"...he did say he could sell me a blank or partially cut blank if I wanted...he said I should have had them build my rifle or that perhaps I should have just purchased a savage...

So, I think that is pretty much out. I did find a company called McGee and another named Robertson that I'll check out this next week.

If you want a good laminated wood stock, another one to try is Bill Rogers ([email protected], 252-327-0457). He is making a stock for me. He is new, but I've personally held some of his work and the stocks are awesome. His specialty is making a stock personally for you to your specifications.

You may have problems getting a hold of Robertsons. Last I heard they were out of business.
That's going to be tough finding a stock inletted for an M70, but I'm sure if had a blank, a good gunsmith could fix you up.

Chad Dixon can probably do it for you, he seems to prefer that you send him an uninletted stock anyways, and I've seen some of his threads over in the gunsmithing subforum where he works on Winchesters. I doubt it will come cheap.
