He shoots his Savage in the NRA YHEC program. The factory stock has WAY too much drop even for the iron sights. This should fix it. Still looking for ideas on stock finish. Probably will go with some opaque texture paint from the pistol grip to the swell on the forend to cover the old bolt notch and may try to laquer the ends to show off the laminate. Or might just hose it all with paint.

It started life as a factory second, unfinished, rough shaped, <span style="font-weight: bold">right handed</span> Boyd's tacticool stock. It's "plywood" also known as laminate.

Now it's about 30% sanded and left handed. I still have a lot of work to do as the recoil pad is glued on, but not ground to fit yet either. Still a lot of shaping yet to do in the grip area and the end of the forend.

I used wood stain in Gray on my Mark II aftermarket laminate stock, and then coated it with several coats of satin finish polyurathane.

If you decide to paint it use some Devcon steel bed to bed the action first, and then after you put a coat of paint on it you can use some of the Devcon to create texture on the palm swells and forearm.

Just mask off an area where you want to apply texture, mix up the devcon and apply. About an hour after the devcon has been applied remove the masking tape boarder. This will leave you with a patch of devcon on the wood. Wet you hands with water and smooth over the surface of the devcon to remove any sharp edges you created when applying the devcon.

Well done on the stock! Looks great, can't wait to see the final product.

You can also stiple/texture the grip areas with a pointed tool
and a wood buring kit. Then stain the wood and finish with
Tru-Oil for a harder finish( but also harder to work with) you
can use Waterlox. Used for floors and a oil based finish thats
been around for 100 yrs. It id tough to get that slick finish but so worth it when you do. I does not scratch near as easy as most other finishes.

Second that! Waterlox is awesome stuff. I did a blackwalnut stock for my 03A3 with it and it's one of the most beautiful rifles I own. Looks really nice if you apply and fill the grain, then steel wool between coats. Gives a nice handrubbed satin lustre.

Looks good

I'm partial to Boiled Linseed oil as a wood finish. After a few coats you have a polymerized oil finish that keeps a medium blonde look in the wood.

Home Depot sells quarts of it for about $7 and you can finish probably 4 stocks for that much.
