Rifle Scopes STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

This is the first year I have heard of such wide spread problems.

Honestly, booths cost a lot of money, you have to pay for things like electricity, so in an already expensive game, security should be on Reed Exhibits. A basic 10x10 booth when all said and done is easily $8000 for the week. And it only oes up from there. Buying your own security, no thanks.

I would suggest to Reed no one but exhibitors should be allowed to carry anything in like backpacks, and closed bags. Only the open crates and show supplied bags. Too many people carrying things.

I think those wheeled carts are the worst thing at the show. I cant tell you how many times I've nearly plowed some old man when he puts on the brakes before looking around. I wonder how many broken toes they get a year because of those carts. No way will they ever take away backpacks. Carrying around a cheap BSA sack all day is going to wear peoples arms and shoulders out. To many complaints will be made.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

Rob, if you can get me a few pictures of it.... I will post them up at the local ranges here in South Louisiana and Southwest Texas and have people look out for the scope.

PM me the pics and I'll get a flyer made up ASAP.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

I hate to say this but I think securtiy guards conducting pat downs should be at each entrance/exit.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

ISBe have you been to SHOT? SHOT is so big and massive and there are so many people coming and going that it is hard to comprehend if you haven't been there.

Searches of people going in and out would never work at all, especially since you have so much legit movement of items from one area to another.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

It wasn't taken for industrial espionage or reverse engineering. Some of you more paranoid guys watch too much TV. Reverse engineering usually doesn't take a team that long. Stealing what very well should have been a neutered sample at a show is far from how that game works.

Apparently everyone's looking down at their feet thinking and not up. If they looked up they would have seen the bright lights and gaudy ceilings and realized they were in VEGAS. One of the biggest organized crime Mecca's of the western world.

I'm willing to bet there were more professional lifters sweeping floors, loading, unloading, and moving stuff around in there that week than are prosecuted every year. Massive amounts of stuff goes missing at trade shows. Trade shows in VEGAS and MIAMI are the worst. Always have been. A conservative estimate puts $1mil of stuff got lifted for the entire show. Most likely much more. But the majority of the industry will just write it off and not file police reports.

TBurkes, did you immediately file a report on the stolen stocks? How about then again on the stolen book cover?

Which is precisely why it's so incredibly hard to get a good idea on the true amount of crime perpetrated in Vegas. Everyone just wants to go home and move on.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

Never been to SHOT, just thinking of ways to decrease the theft. Maybe they should have entrances/exits for vendors only. All non vendors go through the security checkpoint.

So its' OK to steal a data book cover but a an item stolen for "industrial espionage" is acceptable? It doesn't matter whether the item stolen is a data book cover, a scope, or a pirated CD. Theft is theft and individuals that engage in these activities are scum, end of story.

there were two type so security guys there, the first type didnt give two shits that they were there and just wanted to collect a paycheck the second type insisted that they checked your pass every single time before you entered the exhibit hall

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

Were there any type of security cameras or surveillance systems watching the booths?

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

You know what annoys me about this savages who do stuff like this just make it harder for decent people. Now this will force Shot Show to increase security, possibly even mandate searches upon leaving the facility, have scopes locked down where no one can touch them etc. Scumbags make life harder for decent people. You see crap like this everywhere, just makes your life more difficult in the end.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

Guys at US Tactical Booth we had several of the slide rule Density Altitude devices and a couple of my slings ripped as well. First shot show I have seen anything stolen.

Bad thing is at end of the shows I just give my extra samples to Snipers.org. This year they only got ten slings because of the thefts. So these f'rs ripped off guys who needed them off shore.

Sorry to hear of the SxB and Manners stocks as well.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

I hate a thief... I would support the death penalty for any thief, regardless of the monetary value of what is stolen.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

What a bunch of scum. It seems no community of enthusiasts can exist without there being a bunch of shitbags involved. Move the SHOT show to Texas is my idea haha. Alot less theft here. But in all seriousness, no matter where you go, this is going to happen.

If I was a vendor, I would tie everything down. Have it where people can still pick up the items, fondle them all they want, look through a scope, shoulder a stock, etc....

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

It also hasn't been mentioned yet that S&B had a 1-8 Short Dot proto stolen at SHOT last year. This year, the 1-8X was more strategically placed in the booth, but I guess someone wanted it bad enough to take the chance. I understand that S&B will tether their scopes next year....

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

Kind of odd the 1-8 was taken both years. Maybe because it is smaller and easier to hide? My guess is someone will see this posted for sale on Craigslist or something of the like.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

I was informed that there were 18 guns stolen at last year's show, and by the time I got there on Tuesday (about 10AM), there had already been one stolen. This is according to the armed escort I got bringing our stuff into the show.

You and I might think it's be the last thing to do, however, there are some companies out there who send disguised reps to shows simply for corporate espionage.

It is the lowest level of scum indeed, and it is not limited to simply the SHOT show where stuff like this happens.

Best of luck to S&B in their quest to find the scope. I'm pretty sure I had it in my hands on Wednesday while I finger F'd it and wondered how many blood samples I'd have to sell to afford one.

ETA: There were several occasions where people were "reminded" to put our stuff back on the table before leaving...

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

If anyone has pictures of this scope, please PM them to me with all other info on it. I will make flyers and post them at the shooting ranges and gun shops that I go to here in South Louisiana and Southwest Texas. I have never been to SHOT, but this type of shit pisses me off. If the person is found, I hope he/she/they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

It is people like this that causes us law abiding folks to have hard times and grief.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

Rob1-
If S&B has photos of the scope, especially the "prototype" inscription, would it be OK to blast them to all my buds in the industry?
I think that the best option for recovering it is to make it as well known as we can by identifying it and getting the word out to everyone we can, in hopes of either a) bagging the crapweasel that took it in the first place, or b) shaming them into giving it back, or c) recovering it through putting extreme pressure on them indirectly.
S&B has a long reputation in taking care of their customers, and IMHO it appropriate to reward that by doing whatever we can to help them get their scope back.
If pix are available, lets get it to everyone we can.
I'll put it on my FB, and bump it to everyone I know that deals in firearms and accessories, and ask them to do the same.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

This thread has close to 2k worth of hits in just a few hours. Might as well post pictures of the scope here if you can just to further spread the word.

18 fucking guns missing? That is just incredible.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

Was it just me or did it seem like there was a lot of non-industry types on the last day?

And as unfortunate as it sounds, this is nothing new. There are always things that come up missing during and after these events. CES, COMDEX, SEMA and SHOT, all have people with sticky fingers.

As wrong as it may sound, I can't wait till the day someone is stupid enough to have sticky fingers at SOFEX.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

This may be a little late for this year but, an inexpensive trail cam could help. Most work in pitch dark and can be placed in inconspicuous locations. They are very good at watching over your products while you are not there. I would think most of the larger things would have to leave while no one was there. I caught an employee tring to steal tools with one. Most could hold thousand high resolution pics.

btw one set of batteries will last for 2 months of daily pic taking

I don't understand why this isn't common practice at a trade show? Why would you keep taking the calculated risk of losing items. Spend the money on keeping your items in your booth, not in thieves hands. A little common sense goes a long way.

There were a lot of shady characters this year..... How in the hell did all those models handing out strip club passes get in each and every day? I think thats BS. Why does SHOT show give spaces to the people that sell jewelry and airsoft? I dont see how any of that really benefits the basis of the show, the law enforcement and military side. Hunting is a part but how many of us REALLY go there excited to walk thru that section?

Exactly. Even if they aren't tethered, I don't see how every scope isn't under a watchful eye while it's being handled.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

All it takes is one bad apple to spoil the bunch. I hate this shit. Although I luckly have not had to put my money where my mouth is. I have always thought that if I had anything of value stolen from me I would offer a reward of 2-3 times its value, just because for me it isn't about the money it is about catching the Mother F***ers.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

At one of our local gun shows down here....we've got a dealer who brings his own security cameras for his tables. He simply has poles that are placed around his booth area with small cameras attached. The system is simply run by his laptop computer behind the tables. He has used it to catch & prosecute several people who stole from him.

It ain't that expensive to do....under $1000 for the total system & definitely worth it....

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

It's really dismaying to hear this happening. This has never happened at SHOT before. I guess that explains the bag checking on Friday near the end of the convention. Too little too late. I'd love to meet up with these lowlifes some time.

The 2nd year of Shot in Vegas? SHOT show has been going to Vegas for awhile. It did use to alternate between Vegas and Orlando though.

I cant wait for it to go back to Orlando!

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

Guys its impossible to keep your eye on something at the show. There were times where 15 or more people were passing parts around. The only thing i did different this year was attach rings, bases and bottom metal to a action. Something large enough that we would notice if it was missing and half way difficult to conceal. There has been a few shows where little things turned up missing. Especially rings.

The only way is to police yourself and everyone around you. Someone seen the idiot steal, they are just too much of a pussy to say something. NOTHING goes UN-noticed at shot. Too many people with eyes

I agree that the wheeled carts are shitty and I have almost ate it from tripping over one in a scenario exactly like the one you mentioned (mushy ass carpet at the expo doesn't help either).

I also agree with LL - ban the backpacks/closed cases. The people that go to SHOT for a legitimate reason typically aren't the ones you see carting around one - let alone multiple, carts or BSA bags w/ 60lbs of brochures and swag. A great deal of that shit turns up on eBay - not in a shop.

They should also put a a few cameras/inspectors at the ship center or get rid of it.

Most of the complaints that would theoretically originate from these changes would come from the people that shouldn't be there in the first place and would be a moot point with stricter admittance.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

I volunteer to search Sylvia. Seriously!

I think it would be fairly easy to tether the S&B stocks to their rests so that none wander off "by mistake". Last year I noticed several were passed around the booth to accomodate the interests of visitors; instead, visitors would have to to move to available scopes.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

That really sucks to hear about the thievery that goes on at trade shows but I bet the one booth that was safe 100% from theft was the counter sniper booth...
Hope S&B gets their scope back, good luck.

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

Interesting thread.

It really would suck if someone stole it for R&D but in saying that it would be a pretty lowly bunch of people to steal things on the behalf of reverse engineering... you would at least think they would purchase a scope and have their way with it.

If a regular dude did steal this, I hope the scope shits itself on its first shot so he cant send it in for repairs.

I hate theives

Re: STOLEN S&B 1-8x ALERT!

No we didn't file a complaint. It would have taken forever to get that done and everyone was way too busy to even try to go down that path.

I did catch some guy trying to steal a dummy .338 Lapua round out of the loops on a new ammo bag we had on the table. I turned around and he had it half way out of the loops, he got this stupid look on his face and said, "I was going to take one" and he quickly walked away.

Jeez, if he'd just asked to have one I'd have given it to him for free. That was pretty funny.

As to these thieves at this type of show, let alone any thief.... I've been told many times that "what comes around, goes around." Not only do I look forward to the day where that actually happens, but I also regret what that is going to do to the rest of us.

Just think back, to the way things were for our "freedoms" about 20 years ago. Tell me this, will any of us EVER be that free again? I just don't want the whole aspect of the show to be destroyed or 'legislated' into oblivion. And no, I've not been privileged enough to attend, YET.
