I purchased a bunch of Federal American Eagle 223 ammo back when it was under $3.00 a box. I still have a bunch of that left.

However I am going to purchase some additional ammunition that will go into storage for the longer term.

I plan on shooting up the last of this Federal that I have over the next couple of years. So I will not be dipping into this new stash of ammo from a good bit of years to come.

What is the best way to buy it for this type storage?? Spam cans?? Plastic wrapped?? Buy Lake City if possible??

Any good links for purchasing ??

Just lookng for some good qualtiy ammo that will last in storage. Maybe even for the kids. Tom.

Re: Storing AR Ammunition

A Navy vet once told me that he keeps his ammo "preserved" just like his stored food (dark, cold, and dry). I've done the same for a couple of years, just not long enough to notice a significant difference in reliability. I guess it's working? Anyway, the concept makes sense to me. Throw some silica gel packets in your ammo can, and you're set my friend.

Same as others suggested. A good ammo can in a cool dry place. I would also throw in a few of the the small dessicant packs (that come with the wive's shoes). If the ammo is loose, I would load them onto stripper clips (dont forget the mag loader). It may be a good idea to stick a few empty mags in the can as well.

I picked up a couple of cans of .50 BMG that were made at the St. Louis Army Ammunition Plant in 1954. Sat unopened for 56 years. Looks and shoots just fine.

Several good options above, I have/shoot mil stuff from 64' that has been treated unfairly with no ill effects.

Can with silica gel desiccant seems cheapest with best protection. All your buddies can give you the silica packets that come from...everything for free.

Sounds like I need to vacuum pack it then put it in a green military can.

I plan on buying a large quantity of the Federal(Lake City) ammo. I think this is a good product. Do you guys agree?? I saw some on sale for $330/1000. I beliebve that to be a decent price?? Does that sound about right??

Here is a link to two of the types of ammo I am considering. Thanks, Tom.
