Storing Primers

Re: Storing Primers

"Is it safe to store primers out of their box in a plastic-drawer type storage apparatus?"

It is NOT safe to store primers in a pile and there is no reason to do so, leave them in the makers trays.

Re: Storing Primers

Primers are packed the way they are to prevent sympathetic detonation. Pouring them into another container MAY be a good way to remove the roof of your house.

Trust me, I'm glad I didnt transfer the storage of my primers just yet, or else it probably would have been much worse. Those primers are going in a fireproof lock box inside of a fire proof cabinet from now on..

Agreed! I store mine in a large (20 mm?) surplus ammo can to keep my primers clean, cool and dry.

Re: Storing Primers

I store mine in the original box on the shelf in my loading room.My loading room is in the house and the temperature is nearly constant, and out of the sunlight. They should not be stored loose.Too much chance for an accident,or to loose track of what they are. Pete

Re: Storing Primers

I keep mine in a 1500 round 7.62 ammo can. Big and airtight. As has already been stated, can't think of a single reason why to store them out of the sleeve in a sleeve. Plus, all those big trays makes it seem like I have more than I really have. Can you really have too many??

Original Container!!

Re: Storing Primers

Hi
Quick note for those who store their primers or powder in those surplus or any airtight metal container. You have essentially created a bomb.
We all know how primers and powders work accelerated expansion of gases.

My suggestion would be to put primers in their orignal boxes in a zip lock bag to control humidty and the elements, then an aerated containter. If you want to put them in the surplus containers i would suggest drilling holes in the bottom to let escaping gases out. YMMV

That'll make a really nice bomb with plenty of shrapnel.

Re: Storing Primers

I have a few hundred primers that have been stored in there original packaging, in a stable environment for more than 20 years. When need be,I use them for testing loads and they still work fine.

Common idea but not really true or the military wouldn't have been "storing" various ammo and munitions in them since Patton was a corporal. Ammo boxes are designed to be air and water tight but blow apart at low internal pressures. They are about as safe as anything we CAN store them in.

A mindless blanket prohibition of "any airtight metal container" would eliminate the steel cans used for gun powders for decades before current plastics became resistant to chemical reaction/deterioation. Plastic is cheaper than the old steel cans so it gets used now but the change has nothing to do with bomb making!
