strange 30/06 case

Re: strange 30/06 case

Hello Kinsman any ideas what that indented band is. Its 10 thousands deeper than the rest of the case body.
Anyone have any ideas what might cause that.
I picked this up @ the forest service range, there were alot of them. Brubo

Re: strange 30/06 case

The band is right in the area where Incipient Case Head separation would be. The ring is so wide that the cases would have to have been massively oversized.

I would not use them, If you run a paper-clip-trick test on them you might get lucky. If yo decide to use them, load them lightly.

Re: strange 30/06 case

I read something about those years ago. I believe if you check the capacity of the case you will find that it is much less than a normal '06. Some were made with an insert inside the case, much like a 30 carbine case, and the annular crimp around the case that you see was place there to keep the insert in proper location. That is probably the meaning of the SPRC...i.e.: "Special Purpose Reduced Charge". Used for small game or harvesting cull animals. I may be disremembering, as it has been 30 years or so since I read that...JMHO

Re: strange 30/06 case

I wont be using these cases, just picked up to sell as scrap.
Yes they are longer than regular 06. The indented bands on them were pretty irregular. Thanks for the replies.
The SPRG is short for Springfield.

Re: strange 30/06 case

That is a plated steel case. The band is there to handle the fact that steel doesn't behave like brass does. Without that band the cases fail. You see this type of case on some of the cheaper russian brands like "bear"

Put a magnet to the case. They are not re-loadable.
