I have a couple of stripped action screws in a savage 10PC. I did it not paying attention and have no one to blame but myself. With that being said what should a local gunsmith charge to remove them? I ask because there is only one gunsmith in my town and I took the gun by his shop today. His price seemed high to me, but I wanted your opinions. The screws will have to be drilled out for removal.

Thanks,
BJ

Re: Stripped Action Screws

Yeah, the heads are stripped pretty bad. I tried to get them out with a screw out kit but couldn't. I don't have a decent drill press or I would just drill them out myself.

Situations like this have always given me reason to go buy a new tool

Allen head screws?

Drive a torx bit into the stripped hole and crack them loose.

If you NEED to drill them out for some reason you certainly do not need a freaking drill press to do it. Jig the rifle up in a cleaning vise good and solid, upside down and level. Pick a sharp drill bit that is the same size as the screw shank, or one just a hair larger. Use a hand drill, cordless or electric, and bump the trigger a little at a time until the head of the bolt pops off. If you are paying attention to what it's doing it won't mess anything up. It's what the 'smith is gonna do anyway as soon as you walk out the door.

Damn if I'd pay a vet to fix that horse........

Yeah, I think I'm going to just drill them out with a hand drill. The gunsmith wanted $75 to take the screws out. I didn't want to be rude, but I just told him that was ridiculous. On another note Savage could not have been better about getting the screws. I called them to order them and the rep wouldn't even let me pay for them. Now that is some customer service.

...sometimes using a LH drill bit helps as well. It tries to unscrew the bolt as it drills and usually they will turn themselves loose. Put a little Kroil on the threads before you start to help loosen them up.

Have you done it on a counter sunk flushed head action screw, got the slot deep enough to get a flat bladed screw driver to bite good enough to remove a bolt that defeated an allen driver...AND not over run the slot, gashing your frigging bottom metal all to hell?

Damn you guys can complicate the easiest shit...pop the head off, drink a beer (if you're old enough) wilst patting yourself on the back, and rock the fuck on.
