A very generous guy from the Hide gave me a free BM. This bottom has that thick matte plastic/type coating, is flaking off. What would be the best way to strip it all off? What would be the easiest durable finish to put back on?

Thanks

Joel

Put a magnet to it first to see if it's the soft non-ferrous factory BM, or a steel after market piece.

Well, if you try a mechanical method such as a wire wheel on grinder motor, go very slow and careful, especially near the thin areas. The wire wheel will tear that pot metal right up. You could try soaking in solvents such as acetone, but you may find finishes put on gun parts are usually more resistant to solvents than painted items. Once you get the BM stripped, Brownells carries various spray on finishes http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/cid=11357/k=/t=P/Products/Paint-Finishes.

Thanks Badshot. I went with a stripper gel, it wrinkled that stuff right up, I used wire brush and scraper to get the bits off.

I wonder which of the Brownells Rattle-can products is best? Might do the barrel and action in it too if it will work and hold up.

If you have a small spray rig, you can use the Cerakote Air Cure system. Brownells carries that also. I think the Alumahyde is the only air dry coating in the rattle can.

You can also contact KG Industries (Gun Kote) and use their air cure products in a small spray gun.

I've used teh Cerakote and Gun Kote, and like them both. Application is about the same. Everything you coat will need to be blasted with 120 grit Alum Oxide for best adhesion.
