I have a Rem 700 AAC-SD with a muzzle brake from Ross here on hide. I put it on weeks ago after I timed it and now decided i wanted it black. I had a drop of thread locker on it when I put it on. Now for the life of me I cant get it off. Tried a strap wrench and only succeeded in cutting through the strap. If I used tools (even padded) I ended up only marking up the brake. Tried penetrating oil but that did nothing.

Finally just put the rifle up because I was too frustrated...
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

good idea......then you always have it for future use. can always sacrifice a cheap ole chinese wrench for the job.

Re: Stuck muzzle brake! Help!

I'm about to time a brake myself and was just planning to use the loctite that I bought at home depot on the threads when I tighten it down permanently.

Anything else to think about when I do this? Any specific type of loctite I should be using for this that might be better if I have to take it off?

like mentioned.....if its timed out right, you wont need to use loctite. red is what I use, but they make blue loctite that is "removable"

Re: Stuck muzzle brake! Help!

no No NO.

Leave the torch in that dark corner.

Get some ATF (Auto Tranny Fluid)
Get some of the misses fingernail polish remover.

Mix a pinch of each 50/50.

Get out a HOT AIR GUN.

Hose the parts with your snake oil, then "cook it" with hot air.

ATF and acetone (principle ingredient for nail polish remover) has stong capillary action. It'll wick into the threads and loosen things up.

The heat will break down the sugar crystal that loctite forms when it cures.

It'll come off much easier and the hot air won't cook the finish (if any)

NEVER use a open flame torch on a barrel or receiver.

Good luck,

C.

Re: Stuck muzzle brake! Help!

Hence I said to heat the tip. You are right though C. Thanx for the info. Prolly won't use heat any more. Only had to once on an AR barrel.

Blue Loc-Tite is more than I use unless dealing with a QD can adapter.

Re: Stuck muzzle brake! Help!

I see. I have some acetone in there right now. see if it will soak through or not. be a nice fireball when I put some heat to it later. hopefully be evaporated by then.

my other problem is no good way to hold it still while prying it off. my tipton gun vice is a joke... might have to pad up my vice and stick it in there...

Re: Stuck muzzle brake! Help!

Purple lock tite, is for small fasteners and such, easy to remove.

Blue is middle strength and will come of with out heat but most times you will have to use a wrench till the last tread comes out.

Red is some tough shit! If it is used right it can be hell to get stuff back a part! I use it for keeping the pistons on the rods in hydraulic cylinders. Heat is a must for this stuff. And I start turning things while they are still smoking, and dont stop till things come off.

Good luck and I hope you dont skin up your gun getting that off.

Re: Stuck muzzle brake! Help!

Wouldnt heating that stainless muzzle break with a torch turn it a burnt blue and wouldnt come out? Or not hot enough? Not that it matters if your bluing it, but still, something to think about.

If you are changing colors, you are WAY WAY over the 400 degrees that it takes to breakdown loctite.
They make temperature crayons that will indicate when a part is beyond a specific temperature.

Re: Stuck muzzle brake! Help!

i use open flame heat on every factory remington barrel i pull and have never had an issue with discoloring the receiver. i wish they would quite putting that thread crap in there! for the brake, find a bit or other shaft that fits the vertical round ports PERFECTLY. they slide a small box end wrench over the bit while it is in the port and use that to turn it with. you can lay something between the wrench and the brake finish. MAKE SURE the bit or shaft fits right or you will oblong the port! i would definitely use some heat to help out too.
