after a few stuck cases, i was wondering if anyone has tried spray moly lube on their expander in the sizing die.

just out of curiosity, i sprayed my 223 decapper pin with a really thin coat of Dow Corning spray moly and ran a few cases, it seems like it works really well, but i havent loaded any yet.

anyone have any ideas about adverse effects of trying this. i wanted to get some opinions before i tried loading and shooting any, worst case, i can always wash it off with some acetone. it doesnt seem to leave any moly residue in the case neck that i can tell, but as of yet, i havent looked in the cases really good, and they ran through the die like butter with just very light coat of lube.

what i was trying to accomplish with this test is to not get any lube in the neck of the case to prevent powder fouling, and make it a little easier on my brass without getting another freakin stuck case.

i dont have many stuck cases, but the ones i do have seem to stick on the expander due to lack of lube in the case neck.

Re: Stuck rifle cases

I just load up my .223 brass in a gallon size zip lock bag and spray some Dillon lube in it. Tumble the cases then spread them out to dry for 15-20 minutes. I get just enough of the lanolin/alcohol mix in the case neck to lube the expander but not enough to cause issues with powder contamination or sticking to the case neck.

There is so little lanolin that remains once the alcohol has evaporated you can't even notice it's there, that's assuming you don't over do it and soak everything.

If you start hearing squeaks or chatter when withdrawing the cases from the sizing die, then use just a little more. Those are signs that you are about to get a stuck case.

Now if you're loading for a bolt rifle, just use the Lee Collet die. Lube is a non issue. BTW, I find that the Lee F/L sizing dies are less of a problem to begin with as they don't use a ball but more of a tapered mandrel to expand. Really good in the .223 cases.

Re: Stuck rifle cases

never thought of that one... i assume your talking with a bore brush kind of wire brush

i have tried dillon lube, imperial sizing wax, and rcbs case slick, also the lee sizing lube in the toothpaste like tube.

i have not had problems with any other rifle but the 223, my 308, and 7mag run fine with any lube.
