Stupid Case Storage Question

Ok...so this has baffled me for awhile and I'm just going to through it out there. When you store a rifle in it's case, almost every picture you see the case open away from you and the rifle is laying scope towards the hinge. Here is the head scratcher...if the rifle is stored this way (either in cut foam or compression foam), and the case is stored on it's hinge side/handles up, then wouldn't all the weight of the rifle be on the scope (theoretically?) and wouldn't that offer the possibility of the scope losing absolute zero? Maybe I'm over thinking it, I mean it is nice to be able to open the case and be able to display the stick right side up....

You are correct. The scope should be towards the handle and the foam should be loosely cut around the scope. Let the barrel and stock keep the rifle from shifting in the case. This is just my thinking.

Plus, if the foam is loosely cut around the scope you won't need to recut foam to change the scope.

The weight would be distributed among the stock and barrel also, not just the scope.

If storing or transporting a rifle in a hard case causes it to loose zero, I would be looking at other things than the case.

The concern isn't storage, so much as damage from dropping the case, in which case you are correct that it is preferable to have the scope toward the handle.

you are overthinking, i use my scopes as carry handles and never lost zero.
cheers.

^this^ I understand Killjoy's thinking, but in reality, if the scope/ring/mount are going to be affected by the weight of the rifle sitting on them or even a small drop while encased in a supporting foam box, it/they don't belong on a rifle. One reason to buy quality gear is so you don't have to worry about the bumps and bruises of actually using them outside in the real world. Do you want a safe queen or field rifle? That's the point.
