So I just got back from my mulie trip, saw these guys hunting if you can call it that. Thought I'd share. So I'm walking this ridge and hear shots in front of me. I come to the end of the finger looking down into the sage. There's 2 guys chasing a doe through the sage with a 9mm. Their first shot with a .270 took out both rear knee caps at 30yds. They then put 4 rounds into it with the handgun at point blank and it was still trying to get away. My buddy waiting for me at the bottom couldn't take it anymore walked over and cut its throat to put it out of its misery. And they let these people have a gun????

Re: stupid hunters

Pretty bad! A buddy of mine and I were hunting in the San Juan NF above his families cabin one year and we came across some other hunters camp and so we stopped and talked to them for a minute. Asked if they had seen any elk yet and one of them replied nope but he got off a good sound shot the day before! We packed up our camp and moved to a different spot.

Re: stupid hunters

We were riding the horses in Uwharrie Nat'l Forest here in NC a couple years back and a several miles up the ridge from the trail head we heard what sounded like a a herd of cows coming up the ridge. What appeared was about 10 Asians...looked SE Asian....with centerfire rifles on what they called a "deer drive" in broken English. After telling them what dumbasses they were in our best way of comminicating we escorted them back to the road and called the game warden. Nothing like somebody hunting around horse trails from the ground with a high powered rifle. It went smooth but we do look like a bunch of hillbilly mountain men when we are off on a couple day ride.

Re: stupid hunters

I came upon three guys one morning while deer hunting, after talking to them I asked them if they had seen anything, they said have not seen any deer but we got off a couple of good brush shots!
I gathered my junk and moved to the other side of the mountain.

Re: stupid hunters

I ain't saying one way or the other, but the '9 times out of 10' with stupid statements made, are/could quite probably just to get others out of the area.

And it works for most folks, right? And before anyone jumps on this, NO, I don't do it, nor do I claim to. Just stop and think about others "trains of thought".

a) claim there's nothing around,
b) claim to do some 'real stupid things',
for the end goal of:

Having the area to theirselves. Just a thought.

Re: stupid hunters

"Stupid" hunters are a definate reality.

Proof of it can be found all across the 'net, and in spades.....

Re: stupid hunters

i can understand the last post the old hunting club i was in the roads were numbered and you had to sign in and out first come first serve.me and my hunting partener scouted out 2 locations after we shot our first bucks their we couldnt even get back in to get our climber out .someone was always hunting them so we went to another spot ihad planted some biologic in and never did get a chance to hunt it (even tried signing in @ 330am ). it turned out what they did is wait around until some body killed something then hunt it heavliy needless to say we left that club.

Re: stupid hunters

This thread makes me appreciate even more where I live. not because we dont have stupid hunters, but because there is enough PUBLIC land to get away from almost anything, especially the stupid.

100% agree.

My buddy's standard response to stangers in our hunting area is, "I haven't seen anything today. Yesterday I did hear a few come in behind me. I fired a few shots, but didn't find anything".

Re: stupid hunters

Thankfully I haven't been in enough hunting situations like that. Only really got stuff like that from a guide we hunted with last year.

Have had a few try that nonsense. Should see the look on their faces when I respond with "One shot coming at me MIGHT be a mistake, BUT it is one mistake too many when dealling with a deadly weapon. I SHOT BACK. And I don't give warning shots." Only saw that last group once. Never saw them around there again.

Re: stupid hunters

Me and a buddy was on a wma hunt here in Ga. which usually brings out the crazy and stupid. We got in early that morning an I went my way he went his. About 7:00 that morning I was sitting watching and listening. All of a sudden I hear an elk bull turn loose buggling!!! I thought what the .......!!! This is Georgia no elk for like ever. Well it kept bugging every 5 min tillmi got up and left figuring any critter within 10 miles had left out. Got to the truck my buddy was already there and pissed off. I asked what happened and he said as soon as he got set up this guy came in right behind him. He said he flashed his light to let him know he was there hunting this area. The idiot went about 50'yrds above him and climbed a tree with his climber which set my buddy off. When he cut loose to calling elk it was more than my buddy could take. He got up walked to about 25 yrds. of the guys tree turned around and dropped trowl! He said he took a big dump jerked up his pants walked over got his stuff and headed to the truck. We left and he was still calling so I don't know if he ever got his elk or not! Lol

Are you sure about this. When I was younger and living in Elko in the 70's our TV came from SLC and I can remember news reports of Stupid Hunting stuff. This may sound like a joke but it was reported on the News in SLC in the late 70's of someone shooting a Mule and taking it to the Wildlife Check point claiming the shot a Cow Elk. Another one from the late 70's. If memory serves right. A person was riding their Horse in the Uintahs they had Blaze Orange on the Horse as well as their self and someone shot the Horse out from under them.

Definitely has to be true. Those don't sound at all like urban legends

Re: stupid hunters

This reminds me of the stories of people painting "COW" on the sides of their livestock to keep them from getting shot.

Apparently a handful of non-game animals are actually shot every year, but shooting one by accident and taking it to a butcher still thinking it's a deer are two different things...

usually its the public land that has the probs, trust me... after taking out few 1000 acres of walk in 2yrs ago haven't had 1/2 STUPIDS doin what they shouldn't, still have the trespassers.

'm not a hunter, but a lot of friends are. I don't think any hunt on public land here in NY anymore, and I know a couple of them told me when they were on public land they wore body armor for fear of getting shot by one of the morons from the city/suburbs.

Re: stupid hunters

Me and a buddy was hunting public land in SE NC two weeks ago, we got in the woods a hr before daylight to make sure we had a good spot and about 45 min after shooting hours we heard dogs headed our way so we waited around a bit to see if they would push and deer or way, once we seen orange hats we decided it was time to leave, once we got to the truck and started out we ran across hunters about every 300 yds on roads with rifles and shotguns standing in there truck shooting down the roads when the deer would cross, the last truck we went by had just got a .270 round through the tailgate while his 13 yr old son was standing on top of the cab.

I never hunt on public land anymore. Its too friggin scary.

One deer season I was walking back to my truck (after a morning hunt), that was parked near a gravel road. A guy came driving down the road and pulled over. He got out of the truck with his rifle and a box of cartridges. He came walking towards me seeing that I was heading towards my truck swinging the muzzle of his rifle around in all directions. When he came up to me he asked me if I would show him how to load his bolt action repeater!!! I first took the rifle out of his hands and made sure it was cleared and then looked at what caliber it was. I then took the box of ammo and checked to see what caliber it was (it was the correct caliber, doh). I asked him if he had any more ammunition. He said no. I then asked him if he shot the rifle before the deer season started. He said no, it was a brand new rifle and scope. I asked him if this was his first time deer hunting. He said yes. I asked him if he has ever shot a bolt action rifle. He says no. I then asked him if he had ever taken a Hunter Safety class. He said no. I wanted to continue with the 20 questions but it was getting way too scary for me. I handed the rifle back to him. Reached in my pocket for a handful of bills and gave him a $20 (while keeping his box of ammunition) and proceeded to tell him that he absolutely should not be out hunting with a rifle and ammunition if he is not knowledgable of it. I also told him that he really needs to take a Hunters Safety class. Said to him that I would be more than happy to help him out learning to shoot his rifle and/or teach him about deer hunting while writing down my telephone number for him.
I was starting to wonder if this guy was going to come unglued and start flipping out. He did not give me one bit of grief during the whole encounter. I could tell when we parted ways he was feeling really really stupid. He never gave me a call. I had also written down his license plate number and make/model/year of his vehicle just in case.

I have never hunted on public land ever again since that episode. Never feel really comfortable when out hunting anymore, no matter where I hunt (have had a couple encounters with trespassers on privately posted land also).
