Sumac has entered the chat

So I’ve got about an acre that’s full of sumac. I recently cut down what was in a 75’ circle. They’re mostly 1-2” diameter so nothing big.

Ever since, they’re spreading like wild fire.

They’re popping up in my grass as fast as I can cut them down.

I think they’re related to the coyote family and know that the population is down so they’ve increased production.

Trying to get rid of it, I’ve tried burning and the 41% glyphosate shit that you’re “supposed” to mix like 16:1 with water. I went about 50/50 because I’m done being nice.

The glyphosate works on the stuff that I can see, but in two days there will be new growth right next to the shit I sprayed.

Have any of you found a way to kill it off?

It's often a multi-year job to get rid of widespread Sumac.

Garlon 3a or Garlon 4 depending on the situation. You may have to do chemical and mechanical to wipe it all out for good.

Mix crossbow in with your gly. Add Surfactant too. If you don’t want your grass to die just use crossbow and surfactant in those areas. Glyphosate alone doesn’t work great on woody plants. Crossbow should nuke it.

Careful with Tordon if there are trees you want to keep healthy near by. But it will kick sumac in the nuts too.

Your application rate is way to weak. Mix 50oz of glyphosate with 40oz of 24d with 40oz of ammonium sulfate spray grade (AMS) in your sprayer. Not sure how big your sprayer tank is but you are going to want 15 gallons of water minimum per acre.

24d will and if it was me I would hit it with that wait a week and hit it with that Garlon. Wait a couple more weeks and hit it again with both.

Tough stuff like that needs to be hit multiple times to kill it.

I only want to rid the sumac. There are other trees in the vicinity that I’d like to keep.

A few years ago I had an infestation of ground bees. First year it was "Oh look, bees, how cute." Second year it was " Wow, those bees have really increased." 3rd year it was "Holy shit I gotta do something about these bees." In my 1/2 acre yard there was a hole the size of a pencil every 4"-6" with a bee in every one. Fortunately they didnt sting but it was really annoying to walk thru the yard and be surrounded by bees.

I tried every commercial poison out there, nothing, they seemed to like it. In frustration I tried putting straight gasoline in the sprayer...the little sons of bitches just flew away. Killed the grass but not the bee's. I finally contacted the University Extension Agent and they turned me onto sone stuff that killed them, but damn, I've never seen a but not die when you put gas on it.

Mulcher. Been fighting these damn Youpon bushes for years, the have been choking my trees out. Finaly gave in and hired a mulcher, pricey but I wish I had done it a long time ago. You can see the remaining bushes in background. DEATH TO YOUPONS.

Yep if you dont yank the roots out they will be back. Remedy and Pasture guard are pretty much the same thing and do a good job on them. When I was hand cutting them I would brush that full strength on the stump and it did not come back.
I have heard the Indians and the mexicans make tea out of the leaves. So I researched it and it has several good medicinal properties and is the only native n. American plant that has caffeine. So I made some and man its pretty zippy and taste good. Even the wife liked it.

My grandpa had fire ants move in by the house in a huge area. He poured gas in some holes, let it sit a minute thinking it mostly dissipated and ignited it. Half the yard lifted up lol

For wasps, and possibly bees, use acetone but it has to contact the insects. As acetone evaporates is wicks heat away from the insect and kills it.

For ants and other insects we use diatomaceous earth. It is a mild abrasive that erodes the flesh and exoskeleton thru killing the insect. They also carry some back to their home; not like poison but still some effect. For wasps, we use bait and DE together. Fallen fruit from the orchard works well as bait.

We use DE for pests because we don’t want to harm our honey hives. These days it is difficult enough to keep hives healthy.
