Hey all.

I haven't been on here for quite some time now. I've been real busy working and piecing together a hunting rifle before I make the trip to my first days in college. Where I live in SW Michigan, only shotguns are allowed to take game. Sort of takes the fun out of it. But since I'm going to the upper penninsula, I decided to try and build a gun that will theoretically be able to take a deer right out to 500 yards, for less than $500. Now, I'd guess a deer's vital zone to be about 12" square, so this isn't calling for much. That's a little over 2MOA. But, I wanted to do it for less than $500, and I didn't want to go buy something off the shelf. I wanted to build it. So, what do I do? Well, I'll tell you. Mosin M91/30 Tula.

I felt bad for buying it with every intention of wrecking it. My friend also felt bad. He also felt a little violent, but he let me live. So far this gun has been shooting right around 1-2MOA, depending on how much time I have at the range to concentrate :p.

Mosin Nagant - $130
Simmons 6-24x44 - $140
ATI Stock, Scope Mount, and bolt kit - $100
Hughes Trigger - $70
Rings - $25

I already had the bipod, so all I had to do was do a little at-home gunsmithing, and grab some ammo. I will post a range report tomorrow when I take it beyond my 100 yard trial. But for now, one teaser picture. Good old Mr. Arnold Palmer did NOT like a 204gr Brown Bear soft point from 100 yards. At all.

Ill be free-floating and bedding with my next paycheck probably. Ran out of cash for it now. Handloading is definitely in the works right now. Do you know anything about the Lee Challenger Anniversary kit?

Grouped around 1.5MOA today, off the crappy bipod, prone, getting bit constantly by mosquitos. Could have done better but had little time and little patience for the bugs today. Pretty excited to see what it will do off of a good sandbag and after floating and bedding. Maybe we could skip the bug bites.

I absolutely hate getting eaten alive. Drives me crazy. I have had beautiful days at my range that were ruined by mosquitoes from hell. I could take a bath in DEET and it wouldn't help. I had some even bit me through my shirt. Miserable.

LOL! I might try it. But I'm going to have to be calling "no homo" everywhere I go for the rest of that day...

Re: Super Budget Build

Nice job with the Nagant. I am currently fixin' one of these up with my dad. The ones we have shoot were pretty decent shooters, right around 1 MOA, even with the surplus ammo. Try playing with different ammo and see if your groups improve. And if you get the chance to hand load, you can really be effective. You could get into some Lee dies and a hand press for not much at all.

Oh man.... I HATE mosquitoes. HATE 'EM. Every mosquito in a 10 county area knows when I'm outside and they attack me relentlessly.

Cool project! I like the budget build and honest expectations. Looks like you'll be ready for deer season this year! Good luck with the bedding and keep us all aprised of the progress.
