hey guys,

i am looking to get an muzzle brake on the ar i will be getting soon. it will have a 20" barrel. i am really liking the style of the surefire muzzlebrakes. but the two versions they offer somewhat confuses me. on surefire's site, the overall length of the MB556k is around 1 1/2" shorter than the MB556AR and yet its says that the MB556AR adds less length to the weapon at 1.62" compared to 1.86 of the k???

i realize the different lengths is probably to adapt to different barrel lengths with different gas systems as well as to different surefire cans, but it still seems very strange to me. is there any other reasons why surefire did this? oh and since i will be using this only as a muzzle brake, does this difference in mounted lengths make one a more effective muzzle brake than the other?

Re: Surefire MB556k and MB556AR differences

The MB556AR is our older muzzle brake. The muzzle brake is almost 3 inches in length but about half of the brake goes past the threads over the barrel. The majority of the 3 gun shooters that our running our brakes are using the MB556K. Mike Voigt runs a MB556K as well as Barry Dueck who are both top ranked 3 gun shooters. The reason we make the 2 different muzzle brakes are for our two different types of suppressors. We have end mounts that use the K adaptors and then slip over the barrel which would use the AR adaptor.
