Hey guys,

I’m having my first custom rifle put together. The specs sofar are;

Surgeon RSR action
Surgeon RSR Pinned Rail
Lilja barrel (308) - 1.200 HV Contour x 24" Long, 11 Twist
Rifle Basix Trigger
Badger DBM
Manners MCS-T3 Stock
Duracoat - Flat Black
Alloy pillar bedding

I will be looking to shoot Hornady Match 168gr rounds, or 175 gr ammunition, wont be reloading for this rifle just yet.

What are your thoughts? Pretty common sort of build but is there anything I’ am forgetting or more to the point should discuss with my smith?

Thanks

Pete

When I called up surgeon the other day the only differences between the two actions they said was the rail and the recoil lug. Also the 591 was heavier and tougher built. So is it really necessary to go with a 400 dollar more action.

Re: Surgeon 308 Build

I am having virtually the same rig built RSR,Krieger,Manners T5a and my rifle smith called yesterday to review the final list before I pick it up.

He did cut 3 coils off of the ejector spring because the cases were comming so hard it was denting the mouth. Other than that he had to relieve the ejection port and bolt slot on the stock because they were appearently cut for a 700SA instead of an RSR.

Nothing big but you may run into those same issues.

Enjoy

Re: Surgeon 308 Build

I'm not trying to start a war or be a smartass, and I understand the physical differences between the RSR and 591 but can someone please explain to me the additional $400.00 value you receive when purchasing the 591. I looked very hard at the 591 before buying my RSR.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: PGS</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Why not the the 591 action? </div></div>

Re: Surgeon 308 Build

The 591 Has a Longer Tenon Length because the Recoil lug is built into the action and threaded.
Giving you more Threads for the barrel To screw into.
Giving a stiffer barrel Setup.

The Scope Rail is Built in, (saving you $150 US no Base to Buy)
no screws to mess with no mis alignment and more metal built into the action means that its stiffer.

Stiffer more rigid setup than the RSR.
Should help with accuracy and certainly doesn't hurt accuracy.

Re: Surgeon 308 Build

Actually, according to my invoice I ordered a Surgeon RSR inlet, however, I think Tom is just trying to get a whole bunch of his new stocks out the door after the group buy and one of the two I ordered for RSR actions had minor issues;the second one was fine. Not a big deal to fix just be aware that mistakes happen.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: TimResin</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The Stock is normal because you didn't order a surgeon inlet which is different than a 700 inlet.</div></div>

Re: Surgeon 308 Build

Hey guys,

Thanks for your responses. I think the 591 differently has it advantages over the RSR, with the integral rail and recoil lug. Would be a better choice if planning on swapping out barrels too, however I’ m not and for what i want, the RSR is more then enough. Not to mention if you guys are paying $400 extra in the states, i would be paying a hell of alot more for the 591 here in Aus. Trying to keep this build to some sort of budget..

Thanks LarryB, i'll keep an eye on this.

Would love to have a suppressor down here, it is possible from what i have read, however far too much shit you would have to go through. Pretty much you cant own one in Aus..

Think i have most things covered for now. Thanks again for your responses.

Cheers Pete.

Re: Surgeon 308 Build

I understand the tenon length but unless you have a 8 lb 30" barrel hanging off the end or you want an easier job of switching barrels and you have no bedding pad under the first couple of inches of the barrel, I don't believe you gain anything. Regarding the $150 for the rail, I already took that into consideration. My RSR shipped included the double pinned recoil lug and the RSR Picatinny rail mount for $906.00. The 591 is $1295. The 591 is an extremely well built action and if the additional 1/2 pound and $400.00 isn't important then go with it. I came close to buying one but chose to spend that extra $400.00 on another barrel.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: 4Rail_Gunner</div><div class="ubbcode-body">The 591 Has a Longer Tenon Length because the Recoil lug is built into the action and threaded.
