Surgeon action... any specials, deals anything?

So I decided to make the swap from a .308 to a .260. I ordered a Rock Creek 22" 1:8 fluted barrel and I think I want to put it on a custom action so I can keep my .308 in tact. I think I want to get a Surgeon. I like the built in rail, looks etc. But damn, they are expensive. Do they off any sort of hide member discount, specials anything? I'm looking at Shilen, and I know the Stiller group buy is going one but I'm kinda partial to the Surgeon. Also my buddy said something about having pinned barrels so I could fairly easily change a barrel later on myself. Anyone have any thoughts?

Your buddy was talking about pinned recoil lug, not a concern with Surgeon. Easy to switch barrels later should you like to.

I can get one for about $1230 with FFL pricing, if you consider the fact you don't have to buy a rail or recoil lug, after you have fixed up a 700 it really isn't much money in the grand scheme of things. if you sell you will get more than your money back.

The barrel simply threads in, just like a bolt into a nut.

FWIW, I have a Surgeon 591 and a Surgeon round action. They are both very accurate and I would gladly recommend either one. Think Porsche vs. Chevy compared to R700.

interesting... so down the road I could just order a new barrel and swap them myself without a smith? That sounds perfect

The barrel has to be threaded for the action by a smith

Well yeah I know that much.... I was going going to have the barrels prepped and one sitting in the safe so when I burn one out I can just screw in another.

I purchased an action wrench from Surgeon to help change the barrel. Other than that you'll need a torque wrench to tighten it properly. That's about it.
