I'd like to get an opinion or two on Swarovski's ballistic turret system such as is found on their Z6 and similar scopes... seems like a good system to me....

Re: Swarovski's Ballistic Turret

my gunsmith recommends it because it's 'failsafe': green - 100m, yellow - 200m, red - 250m (or whatever distance you use). i agree with him in one aspect: yes, certain hunters are not going to just dial in a number and think they'll hit. use the swaro turret and it's harder to go for a distance that you have not preset.

on the other hand - i do know what i can do. so i _not_ want to be restricted to 3 settings/distances only.

I think the turret is a good theory for a hunting scope. But the video of them shooting is somewhat fake and if you know your dope what is the difference. Go to kenston industries and you will have the same results with the scope you want. This is a cheaper way to go.

Re: Swarovski's Ballistic Turret

ive got a z5 bt on my deer rifle. it works great and tracks true. is it any better than dialing moa or mils for range? no its the same thing, but in low light its easier to see a green dot than a number so i went with it. shooting between your preset distances is not any harder than it is by dialing. the same principal applies to this system

personally i dont like those preset turrets. ive never got one to match exactly to my rifle, load. to me its easier to shoot at x yrds and see what happens

Re: Swarovski's Ballistic Turret

the ballistic turret works with various loads... meaning its easy to customize for each load.... also one can make corrections for various yardages ... example if there are 8 clicks between yellow 200 yds and green 300 yds then just go 4 clicks to get 250 yds... close enough for most hunting applications i would think

Re: Swarovski's Ballistic Turret

You are not restricted to 3 settings.... the turret offers 4 preset setting and then you can have settings out to about 46 clicks until you run out of adjustment... just record the distances on a range card... go to swarovskis website and play with that ballistic caluculator..its free

Re: Swarovski's Ballistic Turret

I run a 6-18x50 Ballistic Turret on my Tikka and really like it. You can set the additional zero points at whatever distance you'd like up to a max as mentioned above. The above post stated 46 clicks but my scope is 41 clicks (I could be wrong though)if I remember correctly. Another nice feature is the built in zero stop with this system. My scope came with a few stickers with the dots printed on them. After assigning each dot a zero I recorded it on the sticker. There is enough room between each dot on the sticker to add an additional range point with the corresponding click value. I believe with the addition of a good MOA dot reticle this could actually be a very good system at limited yardages. I'm limited to 450 yards (max adjustment mentioned above) at the moment using .308 rounds. There's a lot more adjustment to be had internally but the turret system is actually the limiting factor.

Re: Swarovski's Ballistic Turret

i've sold and set up a ton of them, Chris (boss) runs 4 of them. I'm going to put a 3-18 z6i with in on a 300 win mag i built one of these days. i set one up on a 7mm magnum yesterday, 200 yard zero, and he hit out to 600 using the bt calculator and his initial zero. if you use it correctly it's a great system and holds true. we even have a reticle for the z3,z5,and z6 to help compensate for wind

http://www.sportoptics.com/swarovski-rifle-scope-59764.aspx

here is an e-mail i got the other day.

"Jay-the Swarovski BT on the 257 WBY mag performed FLAWLESSLY on my recent South Dakota whitetail hunt.I took one 10 ptr at the end of the day in very very low lite conditions and the 30mm tube was worth its weight in gold!!! The second 10 ptr was taken at 455 yards on my red turrit setting and took out the top part of the heart dropping the animal dead in its tracks !! Thankyou for a job well done !!"

Re: Swarovski's Ballistic Turret

what i really like about it is unlike the custom ballistic turrets, you can change this system if you change your load, switch rifles, etc.

it's new, we are the first company to have them, chris designed it. it's better than the plex in low light and gives some reference for wind hold

I believe that the number of clicks on the z6 2.5-15x44 BT model is limited to approx 46 or so. This as I understant it is due to the fact that the ballistic turret allows for only one revolution...

I am wondering if swarovski has considered redesigning the turret or make an option turret for the same scope that is not limited to just one revolution...

Could you ask swarovski about any possibilites regarding the above?

always a possibility, but consider a hunting situation, the vast majority of hunters aren't going to shoot past 500 or 600 yards.

Re: Swarovski's Ballistic Turret

If you would Zero the scope at 300 Yards. then you could get better range out of the scope.
